Adventure games were some of the earliest games created, unlike adventure films, adventure games are not defined by story or content. Rather, adventure describes a manner of gameplay without reflex challenges or action. They normally require the player to solve various puzzles by interacting with people or the environment, most often in a nonviolent way. Because they put little pressure on the player in the form of action-based challenges or time constraints,…

Video games usually have paths to follow, and offering misdirection, speed bumps and challenges to overcome. It takes a large amount of skill to transfer ideas into a media, and that is where developers come in, but if they do not have a game plan to follow a mess can occur. Writers are becoming increasingly more involved in the video game and animated production business. In order to efficiently supply these elements a production has to be planned out or time lined. In this time line, it takes writer 's input to create a structured story which is critical for the flow of the game and the story being portrayed. A well developed story or plot can draw in players to purchase the media and any games that might follow. One writers expresses why a well written video game is more than important, "As gamers age, the complexity of both the plot and the theatric elements tend to resemble short skits along the lines of "Godfather," leaving the days of Super Mario Brothers long lost in the dust" (Brewer, 2002). Writers are essential in creating a world beyond any gamers ' imagination.…

Plot versus story: I honestly thought both were the same, but it is said that they are different. Story is what happens in a situation and the plot; however, is how it occurs or how the events unfold. “Stories are the narrative accounts of what people do, they are as old as the human race, and they form the substance of daily conversation, of newspapers and television, of novels and film” (Wilson, 132). I do believe that stories are “as old as human race” because without us there will be no stories to tell; for example the bible, it is a written chronological order of recorded stories of past events before human evaluation evolved into who we are today, it does make me think of melodrama. Plot on the other do not include every part of a story, “it is a selection…

The plot is the sequence of events that happened to make the story. The plot is how the story came alive. “If the story is what happens in a movie, the plot is how it happens.” Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C.P. (2011) When we are describing a movie that we saw, we are actually describing the plot, not the story. Honestly all of this time, I thought I was describing the story, not the plot. When we think of quest narratives, we may think of stories with knights and dragons. However, any storyline can be a quest narrative if the story has these five elements: a quester, a place to go, a reason to go there, challenges, and, ultimately, a real reason to go there. The quest narrative would not be complete without the quester’s challenges. Challenges occur throughout the the quester’s journey to reach his/her goal. Without challenges, the story would be dull, and would lack any rising action. Video games are among the most popular types of storytelling today, and many video games make use of quest narratives in their stories, often leading to fascinating storylines. The video game Starcraft uses challenges to make the storyline engaging…

Most genres such as Drama and Action show what people want to see in the story. For example, Drama shows a situation where it could be happened in real life while Action shows a lot of dynamic movement through the story. However, horror does not want to show what people want to see like other genres. Horror is a genre that shows the story that people do not expect to see and controls fear in a negative way. Horror has used a lot of same subjects such as psychopath murderers and mysterious monsters.…

    Immersion: Hero Narrative

Immersion is an essential part of good storytelling, gameplay, and education. Professor Michael Welsh, an anthropologist, describes storytelling as a means of documenting the human experience. I believe storytelling to be essential to any immersive experience – a story is what constitutes a memorable experiences, time and place. The brain stores a library of stories each associated with different sounds, sights, tastes, smells, and touches. There is a clear relationship between the senses, memories, and stories. Michel Welsh described one of the most common storytelling narratives, the hero narrative. In the hero narrative, the main character receives a call to adventure, the eventual acceptance of which results in a transformation of the protagonist, whether it be physical or philosophical. This was the basic storyline Madison Dalke and I unknowingly followed when writing the story of Charlie and her call to action at the Konza Prairie Research Station. There are clear advantages and disadvantages to this storyline. Disadvantages include that it is a uni-linear storyline with a clear beginning, middle, end. The hero narrative also restricts the voices of other characters.…
