When Best Buy first opened it was an event that an electronics store could hold such a variety of products, have knowledgeable employees, and offer competitive prices at the same time. Although in 2012 it was reported that revenues for Best Buy increased, the company still fell victim to the problems of having a decrease in net income and operating cash flow. “The company reported revenues of (U.S. Dollars) USD 50,705.00 million during the fiscal year ended March 2012, an increase of 1.93% over 2011. The operating profit of the company was USD 1,085.00 million during the fiscal year 2012, a decrease of 54.30% from 2011. The net loss of the company was USD 1,231.00 million during the fiscal year 2012, as against a net profit of USD 1,277.00 million during 2011 (Strategic Analysis 1).” It is obvious by these numbers that Best Buy, a company that has been historically successful, has been running into some recent troubles. In this report I will identify all of the potential reasons for Best Buy’s recent poor performance, as well as offer my opinion for the primary reasons for Best Buy’s recent sub-par performance.…

As the largest retailer in America, Walmart has been called “one of the most impactful organizations in the history of humanity” (Roberts 1); however, we must ask ourselves what type of impact Walmart is making. Because they are such a large corporation, Walmart has the power and ability to greatly influence our society either for the good or for the bad, and most people agree that their impression on our current society is a negative one. There is lots of controversy over the ethical and economic repercussions our country faces because of Walmart. It is evident to most people that Walmart negatively impacts communities, treats employees unfairly, and facilitates child labor in American and abroad.…

At the end of fiscal 2012, Best Buy found itself in an increasingly challenging situation. Although it could still claim to be the world’s largest consumer electronics retailer with $50.7 billion in revenues, growth for the year, at 0.9% was anemic. Meanwhile, Amazon’s sales in Best Buy’s categories were growing at more than 50% p.a. and its total sales, at $48 billion, were approaching those of Best Buy. Operating profits were also disappointing having dropped 54% to $1.1 billion and net income fell into the red at -$1.2 billion. The fiscal 2012 year-end stock price fell to $24.70, down from a high of $53.86 in 2006. In five years, Best Buy had lost more than 55% of its market capitalization.1 Best Buy had slowly been losing market share to both discounters and online retailers. As WalMart cherry-picked popular items for steep discounts and Amazon encouraged consumers to compare prices using smart phones, Best Buy became a showroom for lower cost retailers. 2 Although there had been promising growth in Best Buy’s online and mobile divisions, store closures and programs to reduce the size of stores by 10% increased expenses.3 International expansion, a key pillar of a goal to double revenues in five years was struggling. Adding to the problems, the boom in digital TV sales was cooling and in 2011 mobile devices comprised a larger percentage of overall electronics sales than digital TV sets, effectively ending the sixty-year reign of television as the biggest category in consumer electronics.4 Moreover, many mobile devices were sold by telephone service providers, creating increased retail competition. To add to Best Buy’s problems, on April 10, 2012, CEO Brian Dunn resigned after an investigation into his “personal conduct” with a female subordinate. 5 Board member G. Mike Mikan took over as interim CEO. On May 14, 2012, Dick Schulze, the firm’s founder, stepped down…

Based on the analysis of the five forces it is apparent that online gaming is extremely competitive, and not appealing. This boast well for GameStop’s brick-and-mortar stores, as it suggests that because the online gaming industry is so competitive it may deter its customers causing them to look at a more familiar company. GameStop not only has physical stores can go to, but also provide a wide rage online store with competitive pricing.…

Best Buy is a retail store with over 600 stores nationwide and over a thousand around the world. It is the major retailer store for electronics around the world and leads top ranked followed by Circuit City, Wal-Mart and Costco. The consumer electronics industry is growing steadily over the past few years. 2008’s projected revenue is expected to increase by 6.1%. This isn’t higher than 2007 but it is higher compared to other industries which are failing. Some items that are expected to see an increase are TV displays, gaming platforms, and next generation DVD players such as Blu-Ray and HD DVD (which Blu-Ray has won out over).…

If you map out the chain, you have your retail stores where you buy the product at the forefront. These would include Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Here you buy and pay premium to have the game new once it releases. The second piece of the chain is known as storage which in this case are your corporate gaming stores such as Gamestop, Family video, Blockbuster and the newly launched Oogie games. At this second phase you can buy, rent or trade depending on the store for a set market price. Most times these games are used and thus are cheaper than buying new. If you trade in here you get little to no cash back for your games. Gamestop is an exception because it sells new and preorder copies as well which allows Gamestop to operate at both the first and second phases of the product’s consumption chain. The third step in the consumption chain is the usage phase of a products life cycle. Included here would be Redbox and Gamefly which are small services where you pay to only rent as many games as you wish for a smaller price than that of your bigger corporate stores. Finally is the disposal phase of the product consumption chain which is where we feel we can startup a new company, Garage Games. We feel we can give more back to the everyday gamer and still turn a profit. We will allow players to rent, trade and buy for the best possible value.…
