Gandalf’s Presence in The Hobbit There are lots of contributions to Character development in all types of ways in all types of literature. Things that help characters develop can range from a change in weather to a man returning from being lost at sea, but one of the most influential things on character development is people or beings that have the consensus of people. These people or beings can affect characters by just being around or not. One instance of a character having great influence on another by being around sometimes but absent others is Gandalf in The book by J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit. Gandalf acts as a guide through the book but he is not always with the journey when he is not with the party going to the misty mountains their journey is many times more difficult. This added difficulty and lack of a kind of safety net helps turn Bilbo from a home-personality to a skilled burglar.
First the group decides to send Bilbo to scout a distant red light. Then when Bilbo approaches and sees the trolls his first thought is to run back and warn his party but then he decides to try and steal supplies from them. He does this because he does not want to return empty handed and realizes Gandalf is not there to help. This is the beginning of Bilbo’s character change from a home person to an
