Generally, a gang is a group of people who claim territory and use it to make money through illegal activities. However, the reasons for gangs has something to do with young people issues. We have gangs because of economic issues. Gangs are mostly made up of young people. According to a blogger in 'The Guardian', who is also part of a gang, states that gangs can create boundaries
in a positive way. Gangs are good for the society.
Teens and youths reasons for joining gangs can vary from simple to complex. Six major risk factors that contribute to gang involvement in harsh environments: Lack of jobs for youth, poverty compounded by social isolation, domestic violence, negative peer networks, lack of parental supervision, early academic failure and lack of school attachment. Gangs participate in a number of destructive and violent behaviours that target rival gangs and innocent bystanders.
Teens might feel that they don’t receive enough family support and attention, so they go out looking for a family figures. They end up joining gangs because they guarantee unconditional support and be the family they never had. Gangs are usually presented as those who cannot provide essential needs such as food, clothing, and shelter for themselves. They commit to illegal activities such as selling drugs and auto theft to make profit. Teens normally join gangs for protection and to be part of something. They join gangs so as not to remain vulnerable and unprotected in their neighbourhood.
Some young people get the excitement of going against authorities or committing crimes. They may be attracted to gang lifestyles, as it goes above the law and authorities, and participate in many illegal activities. Gangs have mastered the art of manipulation and attract potential recruits. They wear the latest fashion, throw the hottest parties and drive the coolest cars. They can appear to have the perfect life to a young kid who is looking fit from somewhere. They are seen as cool, and often glorified, and more young people would want to join in.
Teens join gangs to be noticed more, to be cool, attractive, and glorified. They join gangs to have someone looking out for them. To be protected. Teen joining gangs also has to do with personal problems that makes them want to be productive in anyway possible. They sometimes think that they are above the law, and would want to practice some illegal activities. Most of all, they want to be part of something unique, they want to be in a group. That is why teens join gangs.
