Presently, youths and adolescent teens have become progressively enticed to join gangs. An individual joining a gang or a non-criminal group consists of different pushes and pulls that work in tandem to represent an attraction or dominating force. In this case, for example, “gang membership can increase status among peers, especially girls (for boys)” while also allowing the opportunity to be with them (Why Do Youth Join Gangs?). Gangs also provide a sense of excitement through illicit drug selling and the ability to earn money. By committing these illicit acts, youths perceive themselves making a rational choice in their decision to join a gang. It is assumed candidates for gangs are already delinquent or have a high probability for delinquency…
Gangs are groups of people usually with the same common demeanors. Members in a gang who commit crime have been exposed to previous malicious behavior. The containment theory emphasizes what pushes and pulls an alleged deviant criminal. The containment theory has two principles, external, and internal contributors pushing someone to commit crime. The external contributing factors of the containment theory represent some background abnormality, such as negative influence, possible biological or psychological defects. The internal principle is observed as wants and rewards, such as financial gain, sexual satisfaction, whatever personally motivates someone to commit crime Schmalleger, 2012, p. 181).…
There are around 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and as well as prison gangs that have 1.4 million members active in the U.S. Most of the gangs like the Cartel are organized and use violence to control territory and make more of illegal money. This would include robbery, drug and weapons trafficking, fraud, extortion, and prostitution rings. What was reported in 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment report, gang are responsible average 48 percent of violent crimes in most…
social disorganization is most often used to describe the conditions for the growth of gangs. the concept of gangs is that gangs form out of unsupervised peer groups, which are unsupervised because the formal institutions of society such as schools, church and families break down. the new urban institutions are not yet strong enough to replace them, especially for the acculturating children. Chicago schools have gangs as temporary product of the second generation. Back then gangs followed a certain code and they were also filled with order. they gave out violations for not following the law that was laid down by the chief in command or a higher power.…
Gangs have produced a culture of their own; surprisingly similar to many other groups in mainstream society. Religious, political, and special interest groups can all be compared to gangs and their ideology. Typically, groups are born through a shared idea or goal by similar individuals. Many ideas may be radical or may not follow the “norms” set by mainstream society. Conflicts between groups are neither rare nor uncommon because of the simple fact that not all ideas will be shared by everyone in society. In history, the basis of many wars has been mainly caused by religious differences. A similar comparison can be made between gangs and the other members of society. Different groups in society have different ways of achieving a variety of set goals such as money or status. Gangs do not have the same means of achieving wealth, happiness, respect or social status as mainstream society does. These ideas of innovation are a result of gang members rejecting socially accepted means but accepting the ends or set goals. Deviant behavior has developed in gangs because of their way of obtaining money and status. Mainstream society has set the example that a “successful” individual in life will conform to the idea that many years of education will lead to a career which will essentially provide a steady income. In theory, gangs resort to violence and criminal activity because of their rejection to socially accepted, mainstream goals. For example, as the unemployment rate increases, research has found that property crime increases as well. Gang members, as mentioned by Bobrowski’s studies, contribute mostly to Part II offenses such as property crime. In addition, Reiner mention’s that one of the three realities of life that drive gang crime is unemployment. With this evidence we can conclude that there is a positive correlation between gang crime and mainstream…
Three different explanations for adolescent gang members delinquent behavior: 1) Selection hypothesis – adolescents who commit more crimes join gangs. 2) Facilitation hypotheses – gang membership increases delinquent behavior. 3) Enhancement hypothesis – both the selection and facilitation work together to increase delinquency. The data suggest that for “person offences” and “Property offences” the selection and enhancement hypothesis are supported. The transient gang members support the facilitation model and stable gang members support the enhancement model. For “drug sales” and “drug use” the results were inconclusive since the highest drug sales and use occurred while in the gang but upon leaving the gang drug sales and use volume did not…
Two words may have similar denotations, but over time events and trends change the meaning of these words. Words such as “gang” and “club” have evolved, and since evolving one has arose as a positive word and the other a negative. These changes in connotations develop when an event becomes significant enough to be a part of the media and become ingrained in history. Then from then on these words cannot ever go back to meaning anything different because of a popular following and spreading.…
I. The Purpose of this study is to explain the uprising of gangs in Americas inner cities…
The article I chose to read was titled “The Gang Culture Continues to Grow”. This article explained aspects of the gang culture in America, and how it has grown over the years to be bigger and more violent then ever. Gangs have been around for centuries. The earliest recording of a gang was a gang named rebellious children, which was mentioned in 2 Kings 2:23-25 of the Bible. Gangs have continued to grow over the years, and now are present in almost every bigger sized city in America, and around the world. In the 1980’s, gangs were usually found only on the east and west coasts of America. Now, they are spreading in land to more rural areas to set up shop. This means more violence, more criminal activity, and more problems for the police and the surrounding communities with its law biting citizens. Very rarely will anything good come from gangs, so controlling them and prosecuting its members for crimes committed is a very important aspect of police forces of bigger cities.…
Gang membership could be attracted because it gives the youth a sense of prestige or status among friends. According to Rochester study, Thornberry (1998) states the most important community risk factor is the level of social integration (attachment) is low. Those youth who grow in social disorganized neighborhoods who do poorly in school and associate himself with delinquent peers are more prone to become gang members.…
By understanding that youth association with gangs are becoming a growing problem, the need for prevention, intervention, mentorship, therapeutic programs have also become an apparent reality. Author, Dishion, T. J and etl., agrees when they also state, “By linking the academic failure and peer rejection to early gang involvement, it will be useful to consider family centered intervention, after school prevention, gang intervention and any other positive program to focus on the school system” (pg 70). With adolescents gang involvement steady raising, the call for more early prevention programs maybe apparent and could help. But, if this societal issue is not address with urgency adolescent gang involvement numbers may continue to soar.…
The group may then commit delinquent acts together but are generally unorganized and are highly transitory (Howell & Griffiths, 2016). At this time the gang is not a formal organization and lacks permanence. As a result their delinquency is not recurrent or violent (Howell & Griffiths, 2016). The gang only becomes a real gang when it makes a commitment to the emphasis of criminal activity. This is the final step in the formation of a real gang because the group transforms from an unstructured group committing sporadic crimes to a structured gang with planned crimes (Decker & Winkle, 1996). Conflict then helps define the boundaries of the gang and strengthens the ties between the members of the gang because it unites them against a collective threat.…
There are many different reasons as to why a young person may join a gang that lives in the inner city, however for this paper, only a few will be discussed. One reason that a young person may join a gang is peer pressure from other teenagers and the need to fit in. A young person growing up in a family that has gang members in it is another reason for a young person to join a gang. “One way to know about gangs is to know gang members, to live with gang members, to see gang members on neighborhood streets” (Cadwallader 2002). If a young person is exposed to gangs then the chances are good that they will join that gang so that they fit in or to make their family members…
Gang life is brutal, harsh, and overwhelming. It is a terrible life to live but yet as we saw in the video, so many individuals choose to take that path of living. I will never understand why MS13 has grown so big, the members who join know the way the gang operates. I would never think that this life would sound appealing to anyone because it is definitely not a life you want to be stuck in forever. I feel bad for the MS13 members that may want to change their lives around but cannot because once they join, they cannot leave. Gang life is dangerous and I would do anything to help members rethink their ways and stop them from continuing the gang life. Not only is gang life dangerous for those who join gangs but it is dangerous to any innocent that is within the vicinity of the territory…
The ratio of youth is the largest in offending crime of violence, the reason is the involvement of triad society’s activities. (車焯堅,2000) Local scholars have pointed out that, all youth gangs is related to triad society, the member of youth gangs identify with the subculture of triad society, it is easy to involve in crimes. (HKFYG, 2000)…
