Youth delinquency and victimization are correlated, because youth being the victim of an attack or threat will seek gang for protection. There are many form of victimization; school bullying, target from other gangs, or peer pressure.
Family History Family risk factor, youth who have a family history of criminality or have a family member that is involve in gang are more likely to join gang themselves. Having a family member that is already in a gang living in the same household, means that individual youth is witnessing and gaining second hand experience of the gang lifestyle. Plus, other gang members may have already familiar with them, so they will accept that individual more easily and quicker into their gang.
Maltreatment
The last risk factor my proposal will address is childhood maltreatment. Maltreatment may be the greatest indication that a youth will join a gang, because if they are being abuse at home they will seek an environment that will gave them a safe haven. Childhood maltreatment has many form; abuse by a parent(s) or guardian, neglect in the home, sexual abuse, all which can affect the psych of a youth, causing long term mental behavioral problems. Mental problems that can lead to low self-esteem making them vulnerable to gang.
