Garlic Repellent
Objectives
There are two main scientific objectives in this project, firstly to understand and improve the production of garlic bio-active compounds by sophisticated breeding techniques, and secondly to improve the understanding of the role of garlic as diet and as therapy in promoting and sustaining health and preventing cancer and cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis through cellular, molecular and clinical studies as safe and low cost therapy and preventive agent. Further, we aim to identify the mechanisms by which garlic interferes with the inflammatory process of atherosclerosis and the development of cancer in cells, animals and humans. Two technological objectives are also pursued for industrial potential applications: garlic mass propagation of elite clones, to enable cropping and processing of high quality products, and the development of new garlic pharmaceutical formulations with improved properties and quality for the therapy and prevention of chronic diseases.
Background of the Study

More often than not, people buy chemicals to control pests and diseases. But there are ways to control them without spending too much. In fact, some of those can be found right in the farm or backyard. For individuals, studies have shown that coating the body with a jelly based compound including garlic can keep mosquitoes away for some time. Obviously such a method, whilst effective against bites, has fairly major social side effects.

The study was conducted because the garlic contains powerful compounds such as allicin which garlic releases are inimical to mosquitoes. They have therefore evolved to avoid garlic. Another possibility is that the strong smell of garlic overwhelms the mosquito's sense of smell. Allicin does not occur in "ordinary" garlic, it is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.

ABSTRACT: Background: The introduction of West Nile virus in Canada is changing the perception that mosquitoes are nothing more than nuisance pests. Interest is increasing in ways to protect against mosquitoes. One of the commonest is the use of insect repellents. Methods: Tests were undertaken to determine the effectiveness of three mosquito repellents: 95% DEET, Avon Skin So Soft bath oil, and a “special mixture” of substances thought to have insect repellent qualities. The repellents were compared with each other and against a placebo in eight separate test sessions. During each session, the three repellents and placebo were tested simultaneously. Each session lasted between 90 and 120 minutes. After every session, the repellents were thoroughly washed from the test site and a minimum of 72 hours elapsed between tests. There were four test sites: the author’s right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg. All test…

The primary motive for farmers switching from chemicals to garlic is because it is natural, cheap and has natural characteristics of fungicides and insecticides. The most common pesticide made from garlic is garlic spray, which controls a variety of organisms including termites, ants, caterpillars and slugs. The plants will only need to be sprayed once a week because of the long-lasting taste of garlic. This should not be applied close to harvesting time, seeing that this could affect the food flavors. Another strategy developed by agribusiness farmers to control nematodes is known as the drench. Garlic tea is used as a soil drench and effectively keeps Japanese beetles and carrot beetles out. Additionally it repels deer and rabbits from flowers in gardens. Lastly, simply growing garlic in between other plants can reduce insect damage as long as it is not planted near potatoes, peas or legumes. By using garlic as an insecticide in one of these three ways, it is certain that there will be no harm to the environment, unlike traditional…

This past Christmas break my entire family and I took a vacation down to the beach house in Florida. On the first night all my cousins and I decided to walk along the beach while the sun was setting. Knowing that Florida nights are warm and somewhat humid, I knew that mosquitoes would be out. I suggested we bring, or at least put on bug spray so we wouldn’t get eaten alive but no one wanted to put the spray on, complaining how it “irritates my skin”…

Garlic is a common plant coming from the family Allium. Garlic has been used for years as a seasoning and food flavoring in many parts of the world. One of more known things about garlic is how it smells, which is caused by the sulfur content in it. The sulfur in the garlic is also the reason why the plant itself is a natural pesticide. Seeing as it is being harvested in many countries worldwide it is very common and cheap.…
