Although leadership in combat plays an important and challenging role in today’s Army, Combat leadership is only a portion of being an Army leader. Leadership in a garrison environment has its own set of leadership challenges. I determined that garrison leadership calls for a leader that is well educated in Army doctrine. A garrison leader is expected to pay special attention to his or her soldiers and their uniforms. Soldiers are expected wear the uniform properly according to Army regulation 670-1, (Wear and Appearance of uniforms). Not only are soldiers uniforms held to the highest of standards but soldiers are expected to be in the exact same uniform as everyone else. Everything must be in unison, head gear, gloves, coat, bags etc. In ranks inspection are conducted by leaders every morning prior to first formation and prior to first work call. Leaders inspect their Soldiers to ensure uniforms are clean and serviceable. While deployed a leader is more focused on inspecting weapons, sensitive items and safety equipment rather than if his Soldiers boots are authorized. It may also depend on what unit the soldier belongs to, what duty station or what MOS. Army leadership requirements using the leadership requirements model outlined in ADP 6-22. We also covered leadership responsibilities and several challenges of the garrison leader. Lastly we compared how combat and garrison leadership affect one another. Over all I determined that leadership in garrison calls for a higher level of professionalism and doctrine based knowledge. It requires a leader that fosters a positive learning environment, and develops subordinates to become future leaders.
