James Alan McPherson uses abstract diction by paradoxically combining colors and inanimate objects, describing the skin color of the characters in the story, as well as slang to amplify the connection between the inanimate objects and colors and create a childishly colorful tone in his short story, “Why I Like Country Music.”…

Prior to the tornado, my experience of Joplin was limited to a dozen family visits over two decades. My lasting impression from those years were of a city that felt more like a small town. However, Joplin is the fourteenth-largest city and the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Missouri, boasting 49,000 residents and a daytime population of 270,000 taken from the metropolitan population of 400,000 citizens. Of the citizens who self-identified their ethnicity in the 2010 census, 85.6 percent were Caucasian, 3.3 percent were African-American, 4.5 percent were Hispanic/Latino, and the remaining population were Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Citizens of Joplin, primarily middle-class and blue-collar, worked in manufacturing,…

He married his wife, Denise in 1979. They have three daughters together. Jackson moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in music. After a long series of rejections, he landed a recording deal with Arista Records. The success of his debut album, here in the World 1990, marked Jackson's arrival among a group of country artists. Including Randy Travis, Clint Black, Travis Tritt, Garth Brooks, and Vince Gill. The music of the 1940s gave Roy Allen hope that he would make it back to England, and eventually home to Philadelphia. When Roy Allen stayed in Colette Florin’s apartment, he made crossword puzzles to pass the time. Since Allen did not know any French, he used American song lyrics, song titles, hymns, and rhymes to make the crosswords. “His mother had been in the road company of Broadway shows before he was born, and she always sang in the apartment” (Childers 65). Songs remind Allen of his mother, and ultimately they showed his desire to return home. The crossword puzzles gave him comfort in an unknown place, where he had trouble communicating. Also, Allen tries to listen to the radio serval times, but could only find the music station…
George Strait co-wrote “I Believe” with his son and songwriter Dean Dillon during the aftermath of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012. On December 14th, 2012, shooter Adam Lanza walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and fatally shot 20 children and six adult staff before taking his own life. Strait was among those asking why, so he turned to songwriting to help him sort out his grief and anger. “Like everybody, I was watching it on TV. I’m just shaking my head. It was so sad and…you know I was thinking, ‘I know what these parents are going through.’ It’s just the worst thing that can happen to you in your life, to lose a child. There’s just nothing worse than that” (Strait). With those thoughts…
The concert I chose to attend was A Tribute to Chet Baker it was on Monday, March 20th and was at Webster University in the Winifred Moore Auditorium. The band was called Steve Schenkel Quartet. Steve Schenkel played the guitar, Jack Catalanotto was voice, Randall Holmes played the trumpet and flugelhorn and Ric Vice played bass. I think that Jazz players and singers have a very awesome talent. Most of the music was too slow for me, but I did enjoy listening to the improvisation that the musicians and singer did. My favorite was when Jack Catalanotto, the singer was doing his improvisation. It reminds me of someone who is beatboxing. This seems like it would be very difficult to randomly think of words and sounds to come up with. I also liked…
I looked up and there he was singing my favorite song. The whole stadium was roaring like a lion. My friend Sam and I were screaming “baby, baby, baby oh”. We jumped like everyone else. The stadium was shaking. My mom fastened my arm rapidly. There was sweat dripping down my friend Sam’s forehead like a waterfall. When the song ended, that is when everything settled down a bit and my mom then released my arm. Which made me feel a little bit less distressed.…
