The scene was filled with high emotions and Gregory as always was melodramatic and it seems at that moment Paula accepted the fact that she was insane, that scene created an atmosphere of suspense because that was the scene Brian Cameron the Police Officer or Inspector becomes really interested in Paula, thus this scene creates the gothic element of a damsel or woman in distress. Also the following scene when Paula and Gregory got back home they got into a fight and Gregory psychologically plays with Paula telling her lies about her and playing with her memory, which can be seen in the dialogue between Gregory and Paula:
