The movie I chose, takes place in the, “not too distant future”, where parents choose their children in a lab based on how healthy they will be. This is a report on the moral dilemmas that this film proposes to the audience. The main character struggles with his identity and uses another to gain access to a job of his dreams.
This society in the future uses geneticists to choose embryos that have the best characteristics of their parents. The story follows the young life of Vincent, who was conceived without the help of geneticists, because his parents wanted to leave it to chance. He soon had a younger brother named Anton, who was conceived using a geneticist. This gave his younger brother all of the best characteristics of his parents, without the negative ones. The most prevalent issue was that the parents choose their children based on the quality of the embryos. I find this to be unethical and another way humans try to be God. The movie shows how this way of choosing your children is not foolproof, and that great genetics does not make a person. There is also examples during the film of how people did not live up to the expectations laid before them. This creates a mentality for that child that they need to be perfect. The book, “The Moral of the Story”, brings up the moral aspect of genetically engineering humans in the future, and asks who will be responsible for the expanding science. Will the research be in the hands of the scientists, or should there be bans in place to limit the scientific research? I do not see how testing on a fetus can be ethical or moral, and I believe that the ends do not justify the means.
