“Greenleaf,” a drama series about the megachurch Calvary World Ministries, features the story of Kevin Saterlee (Tye White) who has chosen to undergo gay conversion therapy to fight off his same-sex desires. His wife Charity Greenleaf (Deborah Joy Winans) has just given birth to their son, so he now has more reason to stick to his marriage vows and his faith, News Busters details.
Unfortunately, Saterlee’s wife is the only reason he is fighting his same-sex urges, but she could no longer be intimate with him. They end up having a divorce, and he soon gives in to his …show more content…
attraction to his male friend and church legal counsel Aaron (William H. Bryant Jr.).
News Busters laments the ending of Saterlee’s story and how “Greenleaf” chose to showcase the failed outcome of gay conversion therapy rather than its successes.
The publication also points out that the character failed in his efforts to save his marriage because he had the wrong reason for what he was doing. Galatians 1:10 speaks about seeking the approval of God rather than man, but Saterlee was only seeking change for his wife and not for the Lord.
In an interview with TV Insider earlier this year, Lynn Whitfield, who plays Lady Mae in “Greenleaf,” said the family running the megachurch really love God but have gone astray because they have relied on their ego. Merle Dandridge, who plays Grace in the series, added that the situation is so human and that there are a lot of ministers who are active in church but do not have a good relationship with the Lord.
“This family has lost its way. They really love God, but now they are functioning out of fear and ego,” Whitfield told TV Insider in the interview. “It’ll be quite an adventure for them to get back to remembering, with humility, where the true power lies. But, for now, they are spiritually
distracted.
For News Busters, “Greenleaf” had the opportunity to feature the stories of other Christians who succeeded in staying straight because of their faith, but it chose to go the same path with the mainstream media. The series reportedly did not choose the side that could have given hope to other believers going through the same struggle.
