What does Pollitt believe to be the most basic reason why people object to same-sex marriage?
Katha Pollitt on her essay called “What’s Wrong with Gay Marriage”? (Page 570), she is arguming against same-sex marriage. This subject is very controversial in all aspects. Some of the reasons are: Political, Judicial, Economical, Conservatives people, History and Religions.
Pollitt on her argument gives different points of view of why people object to same-sex marriage. One of the reasons is Religious. She mentions in her essay that “the objections to gay marriage are based on religious prejudice: The marriage of men and woman is “sacred”, and opening it to same-sexers violates its sacral nature”. (Page 572) What Pollitt is saying in this is that marriage is something pure, spiritual. It is a sign of true love between a man and woman. When people do it a different way it is like he or she is violating the nature of God creation. Another example that Pollitt has interest about gay marriage from the religious view is the Evangelical Religion (Protestants). This religion is against gay marriage and homosexuality as a choice. The Protestants explain that “gay marriage is wrong because it lets gays and lesbians avoid turning themselves into the straights God wants them to be”. (Page 572) From their view it is wrong because God created a man and woman to have children, and a family. This is not the only religion against gay marriage; the most famous one all around the world does not accept this. Some of the religions who are in favor to same-sex marriage include the Metropolitan Community church, which is an international protestant Christian denomination. This one is integrated for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families and communities. Some others are Episcopalians, the United Church of Christ, the United Church of Canada, Quakers, and more. All of these religions approved the same-sex marriage and bless the union.
