Recognizing gay marriage could actually better our government. Although a marriage certificate may just be a piece of paper, it is much more to those involved. America is supposed to be the land of the free. The first amendment guarantees freedom concerning religion, speech, as well as expression. By not legalizing gay marriage the law is violating the rights of homosexuals by not allowing them to freely express themselves. The constitution also gives Americans many liberties, the pursuit of happiness being one of them. By not allowing gays to marry, that is keeping them from being able to find complete happiness. Same sex marriage could greatly benefit our government and country. Having to apply for a marriage license would provide more revenue for each county in every state. If same sex marriage was recognized by law these couples could provide homes for adopted children that would otherwise be in foster care. Allowing gay marriage would also boost the economy. There would be more spending’s on venues for receptions, catering, a preacher, the list could go on. For marriage to be legal you must obtain a license, then receive a certificate. Like I said, to some this may be just a piece of paper, but to those involved it is a legal binding. If a partner in a gay relationship becomes ill or is in an accident, their significant other is not legally recognized as next of kin. This could delay proper medical treatment. A legal marriage would also make it possible for the couple to file taxes together or provide medical insurance on their partner.
