The Case of Golden Agri Resources Ltd.

1. INTRODUCTION
In business, it is important to consider the political risk and its impact on the organization. Political risk is worth considering because an action or a change in policy in one country can have a big impact on the financial sector and the economy of that country. Political risks are generally associated closely with the government as well as political and security situation in a country. If the political situation is stable, generally business runs smoothly. In terms of the stock market, a conducive political situation would make the stock price go up. Conversely, if the political situation is uncertain, it would cause the element of uncertainty in the business.
In Indonesia, after the fall of the New Order, changes in politics and governance was characterized by a significant change in the political system (a process of democratization) which had opened new opportunities and also new threats to the business community this country. For years, during New Order, political parties in Indonesia were only 3 parties: PPP, Golkar, and PDI. After New Order fell (Reformation Era), the number of political parties involved in general election increased significantly. The 1999 general election, the first general election in Reformation Era, was followed by 48 parties.
Despite the number of political parties are always changing during the Reformation Era, political situation was relatively stable. The stability also continued under President Susilo

It all began with the Indonesian National Party (PNI) and the Communist Party (PKI). After gaining independence from the Dutch East India Company in 1949, the PNI and the PKI shared power with several other small parties in Indonesia. The President at the time, Sukarno, was known for his “Guided Democracy.” Under this type of rule, Sukarno was portrayed as being tolerable of the PKI and did nothing to bring an end to their communist movements. Right off the bat, it is obvious that there would be a great struggle for power between the two main parties. On September 30, 1965, some young, middle-ranking officers in the PKI attempted a coup to overthrow the existing Army (PNI) high command. They may have suspected that the Army was going to stage their own coup and wanted to prevent this by striking first. The kidnapping was botched, and six of the seven generals were killed by the PKI. A rumor was instantly fabricated by the PNI that an organization of communist women known as the Gerwani (which had about 3 million members) killed the generals. It was also said that the Gerwani women sexually teased these men, tortured them, gouged their eyes out, and castrated them before finally executing them. Pictures of the generals being killed and tortured circulated in Indonesia. This lie played a large role in the resentment toward the PKI, and sparked the killing…

During the election in 2004, President Paul Biya was reelected with seventy percent of the vote. His opponents were John Fru Ndi, Adamou Ndam Njoya, and Garga Haman Adji. Looking at the word “ Campaign “ in the dictionary, one of the meaning of it is the activity that is held to get the votes and supports by the political organization or the candidates who struggle to obtain the position in parliement, etc. In this campaign, many problems are easily found such breaking the rules of the campaign its self. In this case, Pilkada campaign is talked very often, specially in the open campaign that invites the mass. It will be no good reason other than just to do it in good ways. In fact, the most necessary thing is the understanding of what the candidates deliver. The ability in communicating is very needed. The spokesman, the team or even the candidates can use the open campaign to deliver the programs or jobdesks. However, the society do not pay attention in what they say. In case, political culture in Indonesia pay attention more to the figure of candidates than the program it self. To get the supports from the voters or society, the candidates struggle to deliver their program in different ways. There are many ways that the candidates can do. Sometimes, the society call the way of campaign in term “ tebar-tebar pesona “. Eventough it is actually the real way to obtain the votes. Not only the term “ tebar-tebar pesona “ that can be identified as the way in campaign but also narsism is veri common in the way of campaign. The pictures with slogan are very easy to remember, so that is why the candidates think about those ways as the most effective. It had happened in Pilkada of East Java. One of The candidates used the slogan “ coblos kumisnya ” because the candidate has a thick mustache. Another axample is in Aceh. The governor and the vice governor are Zaini Abdullah and Muzakkir Manaf with political jargon ZIKIR. Jargon is the special vocabulary that is used in certain event. Jargon also becomes one of the topics in language knowledge. Effectively, language helps the campaign to get may voters or supporters. That…
