Information Technology Act 2000 An Act to provide legal recognition for transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other means of electronic communication, commonly referred to as "electronic commerce", which involve the use of alternatives to paper-based methods of communication and storage of information, to facilitate electronic filing of documents with the Government agencies and further to amend the Indian Penal Code, the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, the Bankers ' Books Evidence Act, 1891 and the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The Information Technology Act 2000 (also known as ITA-2000, or the IT Act) is an Act of the Indian Parliament (No 21 of 2000) notified on October 17, 2000. This act is being opposed by Save Your Voice campaign and other civil society organizations in India. User-review and consumer social networking site MouthShut.com has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India to repeal and nullify parts of IT Act 2000.

The United Nations General Assembly by resolution A/RES/51/162, dated the 30 January 1997 has adopted the Model Law on Electronic Commerceadopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. This is referred to as the UNCITRAL Model Law on E-Commerce. Following the UN Resolution India passed the Information Technology Act 2000 in May 2000, which came into force on October 17, 2000. The Information Technology Act 2000 has been substantially amended through the Information Technology (Amendment) Act 2008 which was passed by the two houses of the Indian Parliament on December 23, and 24, 2008. It got the Presidential assent on February 5, 2009 and came into force on October 27, 2009.
Provisions[edit]
Information technology Act 2000 consisted of 94 sections segregated into 13 chapters. Four schedules form part of the Act. In the 2008 version of the Act, there are 124 sections (excluding 5 sections that have been omitted from the earlier version) and 14 chapters. Schedule I and II have been replaced. Schedules III and IV are deleted.

The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008[edit]
The Government of India has brought major amendments to ITA-2000 in form of the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008. ITAA 2008 (Information Technology Amendment Act 2008) as the new version of Information Technology Act 2000 is often referred has provided additional focus on Information Security. It has added several new sections on offences including Cyber Terrorism and Data Protection. A set of Rules relating to Sensitive Personal Information and Reasonable Security Practices (mentioned in section 43A of the ITAA, 2008) was released in April 2011 [1]
Criticisms[edit]
The amendment was passed in an eventful Parliamentary session on 23rd of December 2008 with no discussion in the House. Some of the cyber law observers have criticized the amendments on the ground of lack of legal and procedural safeguards to prevent violation of civil liberties of Indians. There have also been appreciation about the amendments from many observers because it addresses the issue of Cyber Security.
Section 69 empowers the Central Government/State Government/ its authorized agency to intercept, monitor or decrypt any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer resource if it is necessary or expedient so to do in the interest of the sovereignty or integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence or for investigation of any offence. They can also secure assistance from computer personnel in decrypting data (seemandatory decryption), under penalty of imprisonment.[2]
Section 66A is widely criticized.[3] It has led to numerous abuses reported by the press.[4] Section 66A has also been criticised and challenged in Lucknow and Madras High Courts for its constitutional validity.[5][6] Based on Section 66A, Bombay High Court has held that creating a website and storing false information on it can entail cyber crime.[7]

One of the most influential technologies is medical technology.
Medical technology is the application of science and technology to improve the management of health conditions.It has contributed greatly to the society as it can save lives and increase chances for patients to survive their ordeal. Technology in the medical field has allowed individuals with chronic illness to have productive and healthier lives. These individuals can now lead independent lives without any need for physical, emotional and financial support. Advanced medical aids also enables patients to continue recovery at home reducing their hospital stay and at the same time saving money on hospital bills.
An example of medical technology that has benefited lives is the treatment for of cardiovascular disease, the use of coronary stents - artificial tubes used in cases of coronary heart disease to keep the arteries open – have halved the number of those dying from heart attacks or suffering from heart failure. Patients with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) – a small device implanted for those at risk of sudden cardiac death – now have a 98% chance of surviving a cardiac arrest, compared to only 5% without the implantable device. In addition, the minimally-invasive surgical techniques which are now used to treat aneurysms can mean a recovery time of around four weeks, compared to over a year for older procedures.
Hence, all in all, medical technology plays a vital role in allowing people to remain valuable and contributing members of the society. Thus i shall end off by reiterating my stand that technology is more of a boon than a bane to society.

You only mentioned the right side of the "technology" coin: what about all what you ignored? I do not think this theme to be too complicated to be discussed on a web-site, but surely if you had to mantain an idea about technology you should have, at least, taken into account all the aspects; only secondly, you would analyse the one you prefer, in order to be the more objective possible. This is a criticism i could elaborate to anyone on this debate, and more generally, on this site. It lacks in reasoning, in fact most people answer questions without having fully understood the answer, emphasysing the favourite aspect of technology, ingoring the others. What about the technology used by armies, and nations? And, not to be so drastic, do you really think internet and whatever medical technology are totally "good"? It all improves humanity? Why? Simply because it helps us to live longer? Baudelaire, unfortunately famous exclusively for his poems, once said why should we all live longer? Why telephones, telegraphs? This question has even more sense if you wonder about the conditions in which we all live today: we ignore ourselves, often we kill, we exploit eachother. But we are all proud to have discovered the cure to a specific disease: oh that 's right the point. We all needed it.

I agree that technology is more of boon than a bane as it offers many different advantages and disadvantages. It depends on how a person uses the technology that is being given to the user and how the user puts the technology to proper use.
Example of technology includes social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. People can also advertise for their business on such sites as many people uses them and it will attract attention from the users from that sites. People also can connect with their friends locally or globally on such social networking sites as they are easily accessible via smartphones or computers that are widely used. By using this site users can add friends that they know and they can also share about things that are happening or updating their statuses. Thus the friend that they add will be able to read and get the latest information on what their friends are doing.
With this, i conclude that technology is more of a boon than a bane if it is placed on proper uses.

Yes, and a lot of the time technology is not used responsibly. Technology has allowed for there to be a platform for cyber bullying, it has been a way for people to conspire against authorities (the London Riots were organised through social networking sites such as Facebook), and it has been a way for people to cheat others out of money from online gambling, hacking, etc.

As i have said, it is about how the user is going to use the technology. If you thing that such social networking sites are the most annoying thing in the world, why not you just not use them? People can use them for many different reasons for example, business advertising, sharing photos, statuses. So it is still up to how you are going to use it. how is your sister linked to this? Do you think that everyone debating here knows her? Then how are we going to know that she is annoying?

This is one bad example of how a person can make use of a social networking site by using it to cyber bully others. It is up to ones choice how he/she wants to use it.

People like me, use Facebook and Twitter to connect with other friends that have graduated from my previous schools and we still have a strong bond between us although everything is just on a computer screen. Quality time can be also used to built a friendship with what you have said, "love ya 4evr! BFFs!" such statements can make me feel heartwarming as my friends are caring for me, even with such simple statements.

I disagree with your argument. Hence, I would like to offer my rebuttal to your point to prove that technology is NOT more of a boon than a bane to society.
First of all, you have failed to clearly define the term "technology". There are several different definitions of "technology" found on the Internet. These are a few of the many definitions available:
1) The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. (Dictionary.com)
2) The study and knowledge of the practical, especially industrial, use of scientific discoveries. (Cambridge Dictionaries Online)
Without providing a clear definition of "technology", all your arguments that prove that technology is more of a boon than a bane to society might no longer be sound as you fail to be specific. Hence, I have every reason to believe that your argument is invalid.
In addition, you stated that online technology (social networking sites) helps the world to connect. You mentioned that people can make use of social networking sites to do business by advertising, or socialise by interacting with friends both locally and globally, adding them to your circle of friends. Thus, "the friend that they add will be able to read and get the latest information on what their friends are doing". (Quoted directly from argument). I have to point out that you have no evidence to prove that what you stated is from an updated, credible, or even existing source.
Apart from that, technology makes people "overly-exposed" to the public, making them vulnerable to the public.

This is as good as inviting a burglar to your house as you just announced that you are going to be away; or telling a robber where is the most convenient place you could be robbed, by telling him where you would be. Another 13 million users left the privacy controls on Facebook completely unchanged, or did not even know that they existed. 10 to 15 per cent of users also set their profile to "public," meaning everything they post is accessible to the public instead of restricted to their friends. Without a doubt, online technology like social networking sites has certainly allowed users to "connect" with their friends in order to keep in touch. However, because of this, users want to share as much information on the sites as possible, posting a lot of personal data. This makes users of social networking sites become vulnerable to strangers and the public. In simpler words, they become "overly-exposed".

I agree that technology is more of a boon than a bane. Technology refers to the study, development, and application of devices, machines, and techniques for manufacturing and productive processes. therefore there are many divisions which fall into the category of technology. Medical technology, biotechnology are some examples, but this is merely scratching the surface.
I have chosen to use the educational sector as proof that technology is indeed a blessing to society. Educational technology applies to the development, application, and evaluation of systems and techniques for improving the process of human learning. Educational technology includes but is not limited to software, hardware, and Internet applications and activities.
I will now move on to my main point. I believe educational technology opens up more opportunities for students.
Such technology allows teachers and students to access and to be able to work with a range of authentic materials and updated information regardless of their circumstances, financial or geographical. Data, collections and even connections of the world 's best schools and universities are just a click away. Students are then equipped with more resources and are therefore able to have a better understanding of their lessons and subjects. With these benefits made available through technology, no student is deterred from learning from the best and what the world has to offer.
Some people have already realised this benefit of technology. In an article from the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation posted in 2010, the department of education in the Department of Education launched a programme that provided laptops for students in the Philippines. Mr Ryan Letada, eKindling executive director, said the One Laptop Per Child(OLPC) programme is a non-profit, worldwide project that aims to create educational opportunities for the children in less developed regions of the world by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. He stated that "when children have access to this type of tool, they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create and collaborate."
"They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future," Letada explained. The project has also launched in Uganda, Madagascar, Nepal and many more.
This shows just how much impact technology has made, how much it can do to make a difference in the world. Therefore, I agree that technology is a boon to society as it gives not only more opportunities, but also gives people from all corners of the globe equal opportunities in education.

I agree that technology is more useful than harmful. Technology has helped our world evolved into one much more efficient than the past. One of the greatest inventions of technology is the computer. The computer has influenced us in one way or another, be it researching for school projects, or using social networking sites. Social networking sites have recently become very popular as people can connect with one another easily. This allow people from around the world to communicate with one another effortlessly, hence helping people to save money on long distance calls or flying to another country to have a business meeting. As a teenager, my parents limit my phone bills; hence by using Facebook, it allows me to communicate with my friends for free, hence preventing my phone bills from exceeding. All in all, technology has helped us all more than in one way, hence I think that technology is more of a boon than bane.

Yes, i agree that technology is more of a boon than a bane to society. Technology has improved drastically over the past few years. There are many types of technology such as technology in the medical field, communication field and many more. Technology has indeed brought about many advantages to us, especially in the communication field.
In the past, the only form of communication was mail delivery. As compared to how we communicate these days, be it by messaging, email or by phone, it is much slower, inefficient and also unreliable as letters my be misplaced or lost in the process of delivery. Mails sent out take very long to reach the recipient. Thus, for urgent matters, the message would not be able to be conveyed quickly. As technology has been improving, the cost of communication has also been decreasing.
For example, nowadays, when communicating with technology, you can deliver data to your customer or employee anywhere, through your smart phones or tabs. In addition, with the high quality digital still and cameras available, you can provide pictures or video very quickly and in very high resolutions. Also, with technology, you can have live video conversations with many people in many countries using simple web-cams, and a teleconference service. This is definitely much more efficient and less expensive than flying all involved parties to a central location to meet.
Hence, i strongly agree that technology is more of a boon than a bane to society as it has brought about efficiency,reliability, and also convenience to the society.

Handphones
Handphones have given us many uses that brought us convenience. It has evolved from large handphones with antenna to the modern sleek, pocket sized touch screen phones we have today. In the past, phones are purely built for communication, only having a numberpad and display bit now, a load of other functions have been crammed in such as cameras, internet, dictionarys, memos, recording device and weather forcast. This has helped us save time and energy like not having to bring a camera along but instead .
It is true that handphones can sometimes be a negative impact as it can be a distracton to students and play games on their phones while studying, but with the appropriate use it can be a huge help to humankind.

I think that technology is more of a boon because of its functions. Ever since computers were invented, humankind is able to work faster, increasing their output. Like the software Microsoft Office, it allows people to organize their work or also create presentations with information, better than just a oral presentation with somewhat inaccurate drawings.

Firstly, I agree that technology is more of a boon than a bane since technology makes everything convenient, quicker and even more efficient cutting working time.
Imagine that if without the help of technology we could not make use of the efficiency of mobile phones and computer. Imagine having the need to send letters to people from overseas. How long it would take, whereas we could easily send an email with just a click and some finger-work in minutes, or even seconds.
What happens if you need to contact someone urgently and you do not have a mobile phone or computer? Almost 60% of the world population from a recent survey,says that they could not live without mobile phones which is a fact in this modern world. This show the independence of technology our generation have. Although technology may have some bane, it 's much less significant towards the boon.

Yes, i agree that technology is more of a boon than a bane. Without technology, there would not be cars, television, or even this online debate website. Technology bring easy access to humans as we people can order fastfood, buy branded clothes and send emails, which is much faster and cheaper than sending letters. According to the Internet World Stats people, 2267233742 people are using the Internet right now. Some of them may be watching their favourite shows for entertainment, watching educational videos to learn or picking what kind of burger to order. Without internet, they would have to buy books to learn and go to the restaurant itself to order, which is troublesome. Therefore, i feel that technology is more of a boon than a bane.
