Geertz, Geertz, Geertz… The man I would like to be in his shoes!!! What a lucky man!!! Without having any idea what he want to do with his life; ending up at Harvard and as a bonus had a trip to tropical islands of Indonesia. I have tried my best to focus and understand his ideas, after I read that very first chapter on the ‘Available Light’ in which he reflects how clueless he was and how he turned out an eminent anthropologist! I had really big struggle to read him, maybe my subconscious mind does not have a tolerance that much luck or something is off for me to let his ideas wash over me. I even searched for a book “Geertz for Dummies”. Any time I read his piece, I ended up with headache. I am not exaggerating! Anyway, it is not my place to throw him away, after all he proved himself in the area. What I understood, he claimed that the culture are not “out there”, you should work on it and …show more content…
That sounds to me the culture may not change. I think culture is not a text on written in a piece of paper, or interpreting is not easy. I think culture is a fluid thing even it is a living organism which changes any time with people’s ideas and their view. For example, the culture my parents grow up were not the same as the one I grow. Even though there are some basic cultural foundations, they are changed over the years and shaped by the people perception. (which happens in people’s mind). So what I am trying to say culture has elasticity and is not a solid text. No matter there would be a thick description for the culture will be, it won’t be easily to understand for the reader.
