Typographer and Illustrator
What inspires them and what are their intentions?
Gemma O’Brien is a typographer and illustrator from Sydney, Australia. Her philosophy is to help inspire others to become typographers and follow their dreams, she also hopes to improve her art style and work for many different companies.
Gemma had an opportunity to learn how to print letters, using a letterpress, after switching from law studies to creative arts. This inspired her to continue on with typography, after that day she was ‘obsessed with the history of typography’ and everything that had to do with illustrating and designing letters. True to this is a film made up of mini clips about different people and Gemma is one of them. In the film Gemma is asked what the words True To This mean to her, she replies with ‘Your vision of what you idealise and then what you do align as one, it becomes something that is authentic and real and its being true to who you really are.’ What this quote relates to is when she was studying law and wasn't happy with what she was doing and how she followed her dream and became an artist.
Gemma used one of her favorite aesthetics in the piece, black and white with bold graphics and illustrations. I would describe the mural as big and bold, this is everything you would want in a piece because it really catches your eye. Gemma has advertised the film and has given it a personal touch by creating her own mural and answering the deep and meaningful question ‘What does True To this mean’. Before doing this research task I had little insight of what graphic design was, let alone known what the word typography meant. Looking through photos of Gemma’s art left me startled.
