This movie is set in Paris during the middle ages. The main character is a deformed man named Quasimodo who is forced to live in the Notre Dame Cathedral due to his ugly appearance. When he was only an infant, his mother was killed by an evil judge called Frollo because she was a gypsy and gypsies are identified as dishonest people and are despised by the public. When Frollo tries to kill the baby as well, a high priest who witnessed the murder accuses Frollo of murdering an innocent woman stopped him. To atone for his sin, Frollo agrees to raise the deformed child as his son, naming him Quasimodo.
Twenty years later, Quasimodo develops into a kind yet isolated young man who has lived inside the cathedral his entire life as his foster father refuses to allow him of any freedom. But he eventually started to have the desire for freedom and he wanted to venture into the outside world as envies the people to be able to live as they do. He gathers the courage to attend a festival held in the town and is celebrated by the townspeople who thought that his weird appearance is only a disguise. When it is revealed that his deformed face is actually his true appearance, the townspeople felt disgusted and they started to humiliate and laugh at him. The heroine, Esmeralda, who is a gypsy stands up for him and help him escape from the scene. Following this incident, Frollo the villain found out about Esmeralda and he started to develop an unexplainable attraction to her. He instigates a city-wide manhunt to capture her in which he burns down
