3/20/2014 Gender exercise Sex and gender are different things, Sex defines the difference of a person based on their body parts and gender is the characteristic that makes a person act in a certain way in order to satisfy the society. I describe myself as person who likes to go out an experience new things, as a person who looks similar to others, but the only thing that changes me is my personality and way to analyze things. I have black hair, and I cannot say many things about my culture because I have two nationalities, I have two cultures and some people describe me as a hipster a person who likes weird things such as music, art, and culture. During the weekend I went to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico to do my analysis and I found very interesting how women and men socialize, their similarities and differences in places such as nightclubs and bars. In Mexico women is seem as sex objects , when I was in the night club, I saw how women they don’t show respect for each other and something that I found interesting is how they were trying to get the attention of the good looking guy even when they knew the guy was just looking for sex. The behavior in that middle class club was normal but it was similar a competition between young women and older women to see who gets more attention. In the lower class clubs there was a plethora of women who were acting like men starting from the aggressive vocabulary and bad drinking habits, to a point where nothing was important for them anymore, because they just wanted to be and act like and men. While I was sitting around observing, I saw how the gender ethics were totally broken and transformed into lesbianism and other things that I could not believe.

In today’s society, people tend to group one and an another into different categories according to their own social identity. An individual’s gender identity refers to which group where one belongs to. The attributes assigned to both males and females are different because of gender differences. In “Becoming members of Society: Learning the Social Meanings of Gender” by Aaron Devor, the author argues that factors such as beliefs and behaviors help differentiate the sexual identity of a person. In addition, Devor views sex as an instrument of determining gender. It is believed that there are only two types of sexes that exist. Which are male and female. On the other hand, “Girl”, by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother tries to forces prescribe behavior,…

So while your sex as male or female is a biological fact that is the same in any culture, what that sex means in terms of your gender role as a 'man' or a 'woman' in society can be quite different cross culturally. These 'gender roles' have an impact on the health of the individual. In sociological terms 'gender role' refers to the characteristics and behaviours that different cultures attribute to the sexes. What it means to be a 'real man' in any culture requires male sex plus what our various cultures define as masculine characteristics and behaviours, likewise a 'real woman' needs female sex and feminine characteristics.…

Biology alone determines whether a person is female or male, not culture, but cultural myths outline the roles women and men play in society. These cultural myths constitute to the lack of differentiation between sex and gender, imposing the idea of nature versus nurture. While one is born either female or male due to biology, one’s culture ultimately makes one into a woman or a man. Society has predisposed images of what it means to be feminine or masculine. These gender roles limit the individual’s potential, making humans into performers that must conform to their “appropriate” roles. Being a man should not rely on appearing dominant, aggressive, or never admitting to weaknesses, nor should a woman’s life depend on her reproductiveness…

To start with, it is important to put forward the difference between sex and gender. The two terms have different meaning and the meaning of each borrows from different theories characteristic of feminist theories. The term sex refers to male or female based on biological features. On the other hand, the term gender denotes men and women as defined by social factors. However the extent to which the society meets its definition for gender is based on diverse and dynamic considerations, such that gender aspects will vary from one society to another (Warnke 156).…

I like how you used the example of gender roles within the Mexican culture. In my own culture, there were things that women or men should do and not do. I also grew up being told that I should always look presentable and dress in nice clothing. I also did not play with the boys because they were just too rough besides my younger cousin. I believe I use to be very girly and fit in what our society thinks a girl should be. I have also heard that men should not cry, crying for men was basically never okay. Now as I grew older and I have more of a gender fluid approach. I believe I am still girly, but I do not care as much about if I fit the perfect gender role. I believe it is okay to be this way, but my family is still fixed on specific roles that they see fit in any given situation. I also recognize that there are gender roles and people expect certain things out of other people. I do not hold these standards to others. I believe everyone should be able to be what and how they want to be overall. I also believe that women can do anything that men can do, and men can do anything that women can do. I am happy that today we are a little more flexible as a society then we were before. Roles such as, cooking, cleaning, being the nurturer, dressing nice, etc. can be for men or women. I think taking turns to do things in a marriage or partnership is also a good idea. I agree that not every women or men has to fall into proscribed gender roles. Lastly, I agree it is important to me that people realize that gender roles exist and that it is okay to go against…

Through human culture, we can see how life chances (political theory of the opportunities each individual has to improve his or her quality of life) and the life experiences of a human being are a mere social construction according to their sex, gender identity and role they play in society. This creates inequality between people in society. ‘Sex depends on whether you were born with distinct male or female genitals and a genetic program that released either male or female hormones to stimulate the development of your reproductive system. Gender is your sense of being male or female and your playing masculine and feminine roles in ways defined as appropriate by your culture and society. Gender identity is one’s identification with, or sense of belonging to, a particular sex – biologically, psychologically and socially. And gender roles are widely shared expectations about how males and females are supposed to act’ (Kirkman, Alison 2012, p.354). Knowing this, how does gender affect someone’s life chances and life experiences? Depending on the way individuals present themselves to society!…

Patriarchy is “the systematic organization of male supremacy” or the social system organized around gender difference (55). The system of patriarchy has created a set of Eurocentric masculinist epistemological conditions for today, because of this it creates social normalities which determines how people should present their gender and how they should fit into society. Society has made it acceptable to limit gender and create a stratification system to rank statuses unequally (65). Social constructions of hetero-patriarchy that have been formed expect women “to be modest and virtuous, to look beautiful, and, simultaneously to lure men” they hurl these ideas at us through propaganda and media (150). As a woman, I’m supposed to be heterosexual, beautiful, feminine and easily oppressed, we’re expected to fit in a cis female binary and do our gender correctly. Should we choose to break our binary we are sometimes punished for it “through name calling, discrimination, hate and outright violence” (155). Society tries to reject ideas that don’t fit within the specific stratification, I happen to not fit into the typical social stratification. I normally present myself as a cis female, however I’m not heterosexual. Being homosexual is an inequality within whiteness, and it’s not the preferred sexuality according to social constructions.…

When it comes to way that one perceives their sexual identity as either male or female, there are many reasons a person goes one way or the other. There are genetic reasons, mental reasons, and ways in which a child raised. There are plenty of arguments about nature vs. nurture, but the truth is, no one knows for sure. It seems to be a little bit of both. A child can be born with sex organs. A girl can be born with a vagina on the outside but male testicles inside, and this child may identify more as a male than a female. This child, because it was born with the outside genitals of a girl can be raised a girl, put in dresses, have long hair, but grow and identify herself more as a male than a female. There can be regular genitals on a person, a man with a penis and testicles, but they may identify themselves more as a female than a male. His can be from genetics, or mental connection one has with the other sex. I do believe that gender identity starts early and children have no control of which sex they identify with. We can treat a child as one ex there whole life, and they grow up and change, and the parents can be wrong. This does occur often but can happen at any time.…

According to the holy bible, the god made a woman from a man's rib. This shows that from ancient time, a woman already became dependent on a man. Today, that opinion seems to be changing. Many countries on the world admit to gender equality among men and women. However, there are some people still think that woman are born to be subordinate to men. What factors make these people always think like that? Are they biological, or social and cultural factors?…
