The popular article, “Why Street Protests Don’t Work,” is by Moisés Naím, a contributing editor for The Atlantic, an author of more than 10 books, and a distinguished fellow in the International Economics Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Throughout this article, Naím argues that protests are no longer productive with the popularization of street marches. By explaining how social media has undermined real activism and productive, organized protesting, Naím’s piece is subjectively denouncing social media’s affect on social movements and demonstrations. Naím’s aim is to inform the public about the importance of organized and committed movements rather than the popular movement of clicking to share without sustained action…
English, as an alive language, undergoes changes with the time. However, one main feature has stayed the same since its creation. Being an androcentric language, it still contains gender bias, that much or less affects people. This is what C. Miller and K. Swift write about in their article “Who’s in charge of the English language,” addressed to the Members of the Association of American University press. The two authors use logical appeals (authors cited, examples from dictionaries and anthropology) to convince people that writers should not use gender-biased language. However, it is their use of emotional appeals (such as appeals to democratic values, usage of “we”, and the sense of common purpose) that most persuades.…
The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is often invoked to explain the permissibility of an individual’s action that has two outcomes: one where the end result can be foresee and is good, the other that can also be foresee and is bad (Goldworth, Amnon, 2008). In other words, this doctrine is used to justify cases such as where doctors give drugs to patients to relieve severe pain (good result) knowing that doing so may shorten their life span (bad result). Under DDE, this action is justifiable because the physician intention is not aiming directly at killing the patients. The bad result of the patient’s death is a side effect of the good result of reducing the patient’s distressing pain. However, this doctrine is also a subject of controversy,…
“Boys will be boys” (Tannen 193) is a statement is said quite frequently. Boys can sometimes be more outspoken in any kind of group setting, whereas girls are more than likely to keep their opinion to themselves. In How Male and Female Students Use Language differently, written by Deborah Tannen, we are giving a look into how because boys and girls behave differently there is a reflection of that in the classrooms. Through an experiment in a classroom setting Tannen was able to gather how differently male and female students were. In her writing, Tannen tells her readers how boys are more likely to voice their opinions than members of the opposite world.…

“According to TNS Research Surveys, 68 percent of women surveyed believe gender discrimination exist in the workplace. Federal law protects women and other minorities from discrimination in the workplace. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 ended the practice of paying men more than women when performing the same jobs and duties. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act extended this protection to other minorities. Despite these protections, many women still feel gender-based discrimination is a problem in some businesses” (Gluck). Regardless of the amount of attention discrimination of forms may receive and the progress made towards equal rights for all individuals in the work place, there is evidence that discrimination is still not a thing of the past just yet.…
Language and gender are always changing because of a factor, which is to meet the needs of the people using it. The changing culture we used affects the way language develops and the way it is used by different people in the society. The ideology of a society is reflected in its use of language because children learn their values, assumptions and expectations from their parents and the words that they have to learn. Based on Gender and Language text book by Angela Goddard, this ideology is passed down from generation to generation. It means that process of socialization lasts our whole lifetime. Therefore, learning about gender starts at a very early age. As Angela Goddard said in the text book page 41”...how the brain functions in relation to the world and language, and how language influences the way our brains organism information.” In this paper we will analyze about how brain can separate gender in the language used between male and female when girls talk with other girls, when boys talk with other boys and also when boys talk with girls in the social network by using discourse analysis.…

Weather there is a nexus or not may not be the question that needs to be asked here, more importantly is there a cultural punishment in the real world of life and how we speak when we go into a job interview, or the professional world in general? In the world of business if you speak slang you are thought to be uneducated. Speaking an Ebonics is just fine when communicating with those that accustomed to that language, but speaking it to the majority of the rest it does not come across very well, I speak differently when I’m around my friends. There is no race-based issue when it comes to language and the culture of that language, it only becomes race-based discrimination if the teacher is unwilling to accept the language the student is using…
The question posed is our society sexist? The answer is yes, for many reasons benevolent sexism to start. An idea that women are inferior and but she is okay with it as long as you tell her she is pretty. is This opens our society up to hostile sexism which tells a woman that being a woman is not okay and do not dare rebuke a man. These two forms of sexism open the question of how a woman deals with this sexist society. The paper will speak about these forms of sexism and what women use to navigate through our society focusing on the gender strategy of emphasized femininity.…
Feminism , in general terms, is a movement for women’s empowerment. It comprises a wide range of social, cultural and political movements and is concerned with gender inequalities and equal rights for women. Feminist movement has generated feminist theory which puts feminist ideas into theoretical background. It aims at understanding the nature of inequality and focuses on gender politics , power relations and sexuality. It explores a broad scope of themes such as discrimination, stereotyping, objectification, especially sexual one, oppression and patriarchy. Feminist literary criticism derived from feminist theory and it deals with traditions and conventions of patriarchy, a social system in which , from the feminist point of view , men hold all the power. From this particular point of view , a feminist text, a work of literature or a film , needs to posses certain features and stress particular issues such as encouragement of female empowerment and abandonment of the stereotypical way of portraying a woman, it should challenge gender role model and a patriarchal system of society.…
The writing depicts the gender role in literature, how males are shown to be significantly more dominant, physically and mentally. Sexism in literature is ubiquitous, in literature and language, as well as semiotics in certain cases. Literature from the last two centuries demonstrates a progression. Females were originally portrayed as feeble minded, nimble and weak characters, with little or no dynamics to their personification. Males were shown to be strong, intelligent and domineering, and would be the ones who’d save females from all the unfortunate events in the story. In modern literature, males and females are often times, given equal consideration. Sexism is indeed, still present in modern literature; however, it has lessened considerably. Discrimination based on gender is an extremely common civil rights violation here in the United States, and it can manifest itself in many ways. It is often seen in the work place, where women are often payed less for the same jobs as men. Gender discrimination can also manifest itself through pregnancy discrimination and even sexual assault. Things like unwelcome sexual advances, dismissal due to pregnancy, and other forms of harassment found both in and out of the workplace are an unfortunate reality that many women here in the United States and throughout the world suffer from.…
According to the Cambridge dictionary, gender discrimination is a situation in which someone is treated less well because of their sex, usually when a woman is treated less well than a man. Men are always, until today, seen as the figure of leadership and success in many countries with no exceptions to some well-known countries where women are given as much rights as their counterpart (Dailymail, July 18, 2011). This problem is clearly expressed in countries such as India, Pakistan and China, however, not only them, the entire world deals with this. So, this is one of the biggest global issues.…
