Question: Was the development of gender inequality natural or was it created by early humans?
“Women have been both victims and victors rather than having been universally subordinated in patriarchal societies”.
Gender inequality is an issue in the modern world, however it didn’t originate naturally but was rather created by early humans. Women are viewed as inferior to men in the more recent decades of our existence, whether because they're less robust or more sensitive this has been the case for quite some time. For instance if no gender is specified you are to assume that what is being regarded are the thoughts, ideas, and or activities of a man.
During paleolithic times women and men had different responsibilities when it came to providing for the family. While the men would be out hunting for animals the women would be at home taking care of the children, cooking, and working with animal skins which would later be made into clothing. However even during that time women would gather roots, nuts, and leaves and would even capture certain small animals. There was basic gender equality during that period of time. Not in the sense that women and men both did fifty percent of the same task, but rather that the tasks that each of them did were of equal importance while each suited to fit their respective forte. “Societies depended on productive labor by most adults, but they usually divided them into male and female tasks.”
Considering times even further back to prehistoric, Neolithic times, there was not only gender equality but even a partial superiority on a woman’s part. Women had been widely worshipped in the forms of goddesses. They were viewed as divinities. They were considered superior beings rather than inferior. There were approximately as many gods as there were goddesses, which only goes to show how little gender inequality there was in times that were much before the present day when there is much more gender inequality.
