Gender Psychology Peer Interview
Conforming to Society’s Expectations or Challenging Them? Before conducting my interview, I started reading the assignment guide and thought of who would be a good person to interview. It was someone who I needed to know and have the confidence with for them to open themselves and talk to me about their gender and life through the years. As I was eating lunch one day in the school’s student center discussing among my peers my assignment one of the girls became interested in the topic and wanted to be interviewed. It was a scary feeling as she was going to be traveling alone to Hong Kong. When she told her friends, they all resented the idea and did not agree she was doing the right thing, but this did not stop her. Her parents encouraged her to pursue her dream, as she wasn’t going to have the experience later on to live in Hong Kong for a summer ever again. She continued her plan and went to Honk Kong for the summer. Looking back, she says that it was hard adjusting herself, but that it was the most amazing experience. She exposed herself to a new society that she did not know. She learned from the people about their traditions and societal expectations. Even though older generations of woman do not work in Hong Kong, when she was there in the summer she realized that many younger woman are becoming part of the work force and are being recognized for their efforts. Although not to the same level as men it is becoming less divided societal roles. In the households as well the roles are being changed, as she witnessed that no longer in all occasions are the head of the household woman. After she came back, all of her friends were anxious to know how her experience had been. At first they were not as excited, but after they showed their enthusiasm and
