Puritan beliefs were very strict and proper. They believed in a close correlation between church and government. One huge belief that they lived by was gender roles. These roles were ingrained in their society, seeing women as inferior. (Puritans). All puritans were expected to live by this, having the idea that there is a strict right and wrong. The Puritan belief of gender roles are not necessary or fair in society.
Puritans had many reasons for this belief that they saw logical. They believed that women were weaker than men and never would be as strong as men in many ways (Intro). They saw this weakness in not only the body but also in the mind (Intro). By seeing them as the weaker gender, they were not allowed to lead
anything. They were not allowed to be community leaders all because of the belief that the men’s minds were stronger (Intro). With this, women were not allowed to vote, buy or sell land, speak out in church, or file for divorce (Gender). Altogether, women were seen as needing to be dominated by a male figure (Puritans).
With this belief, women were expected to stay home and do all of the home duties as was expected by most women of this time period (Gender). However, the women were expected to follow every single rule of the gender role belief. If they did not follow a rule specifically they were deemed as dangerous (Puritans).
I believe, however, that men and women are equal. This is shown by today’s society where women are doing the same things as men in the same way. Women are occupying the same jobs as men and doing them just as good. All in all, women are just as capable as men are.
With this unfair belief within the Puritan society, it really shows that there are flaws within their beliefs (Puritans). The idea that women are inferior to men is completely biased because men are the ones who introduced this belief. Utilizing gender roles is unfair and not necessary.
