In most relationships today the male will pay for both the girl and himself. However there are cases where the female is the one who pays for everything. In the essay by Who’s Cheap Laura states how her date told her “you shouldn’t get gas here it’s a rip-off” (46). Lara tells us about her frustration on how the standards for males and females plays a huge role in this century. The question she keeps asking in her essay is, “How come guys can do it but girls can’t?” Laura’s friend stated that it wasn’t okay for her date to be cheap. “Before dumping a guy for ordering the sundowner dinner or the house white, better first make sure you aren’t burdening the relationship with outdated ideas of how sexes should behave” (Lara 47). As a male you are raised to believe that it is your job to take care of the bill, and pay for everything on a date it is just a part of being a man. This is just one of those traditions that will not go away because, if you like someone and are trying to impress them making them pay for the bill won’t get you a second date. From reading Klein’s and Lara’s essay about gender role we see how far women have come from their traditional status as a housekeeper. Women have fought a long hard battle for equal rights and say in this country. The influence of gender roles in society can be traced all the way back to Adam and Eve. Adam was Eve’s protector. Has much as we might hate gender roles, and wish they would fade with time they will always be a factor in our society. As we progress with time these roles change as well. Tradition tells us that a male works and female stays home. In the modern age we see something much different males at home while women work. My mom told me when she was a child her dad worked while her mom stayed home, and was the housewife. This is the typical American family, but now I see my grandma going to work while my grandpa stays home with the “housewife”
