It may seem unlikely, but women are almost twice as likely to spend less than 40 hours a week working while men are twice as likely to work over 40 hours ( Mark J. Perry and Andrew G. Biggs). This separation of hours may be do to the fact that women are more likely to take time off for family than men. For instance women spend on average 14.2 hours on housework, compared to a man's 8.6 hours, and women spend 10.7 hours on childcare compared to a men's 7.2 (Kim Parker). This explains a portion of the pay gap and the reason women work less hours. Due to the fact that women spend more time with family it can also be harder to get ahead in work. In fact 58% of working Millennial mothers (ages 18 to 32 in 2013), say that being a working mother makes it harder for them to get ahead at work (Kim Parker). Some might argue that studies find that women with children are more productive in the workplace than women without children. Although this may be true this study does not account for men in the workplace nor time spend there. So it is irrelevant.
