Notes on the States of Virginia was the full length book written by Thomas Jefferson in 1781, during the American revolutionary war. In 1780, the secretary of the French legation to the United States “Francois Marbois” had drawn up 22 questions wishing to collect information on each of the 13 states to answer to his superiors. Those questions were sent to several possible informants including Joseph Jones, who at that time a member of congressional delegation. He had written the original questionnaire in his own hand writing and had given it to Thomas Jefferson; the second governor of Virginia who he had thought was the best person to answer all of the complicated questions about the beloved state. Joseph Jones knew about this Virginian’s knowledge and passion about the largest of the 13 original states. Jefferson rearranged Marboi’s 22 queries into the 23 queries and conducts his readers from a discussion of geography of Virginia through the state’s civilization.…
The Liberty Bell, would be one of the most important places in Pennsylvania to me. As described in the book Pennsylvania: History of Commonwealth, it signifies the birth of our nation, independence and freedom (X). I believe it is powerful as it represents many great people who fought for freedom to build…
Colonial Williamsburg is an open window into the past, as it depicts many significant social and political groups. This educational museum, which is the biggest living one on Earth, has had plenty of significant historic structures that have benefitted leaders and the citizens themselves. Bruton Parish Church, the Capitol, the Governors Palace, and the Magazine have all had important roles in the past, but which one is important enough to be made into a commemorative coin? Although every one of these buildings were crucial during colonial times, are relevant today, and reflect on the motto, ” That the future may learn from the past.” , the Magazine deserves the spot for holding a majority of the soldier’s weapons, stating independence, and explaining how and why people used and organized their weapons.…
The Nevada constitution was framed by a convention of delegates chosen by the people. The convention met at Carson City on July 4, 1864, and adjourned on July 28 of the same year. On the 1st Wednesday of September 1864, the constitution was approved by the vote of the people of the Territory of Nevada, and on October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed that the State of Nevada was admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original states.…
Although the power of the national government increased during the early republic, this development often faced serious opposition. Compare the motives and effectiveness of those opposed to the growing power of the national government during TWO of the following: The Whiskey Rebellion, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, or the Hartford Convention.…
We arrived today on the island of Roanoke. Queen Elizabeth of England had sent us over here to start a colony in the new world. There were about one hundred and twenty people on board that tiny vessel consisting of men, women, and children. I am very happy to make it onto land after so long on the water in a crowded ship. The land is dense with forests, and the bodies of water that surround us are beautiful. John White has been named governor of our colony.…
The Virginia Plan stood on the claim of expanding national power over the states and to have representation to states based on their amount of population. One of the delegates whom were for a stronger national government had mentioned the new country was ready for tyranny. I believe that the thought of having a country under tyranny is dangerous and feeding the national government too much power, especially since the states have already suffered under the harsh rule of tyrant leader, King George III.…
During the 17th and 18th century, English populace felt that England was over-crowded and oppressive. They longed to mitigate the problems that arose because of the exaggerated population boom and to establish a government that would allot them the freedom they thought they deserved. The English believed that the best way to go about this was to colonize the New World. Subsequently, many colonies began to develop, and of these colonies, Massachusetts and Virginia were the most well-known. The early settlements of the Massachusetts and Virginia were both established by similar groups of people at the same time; however, their contrasting beginnings as a colony, views on religion, and means of economic stability created two different politics and economic systems.…
Virginia and Massachusetts were the first two colonies settled by England in the New World. However, these colonies were very different from each other. Virginia’s economy, based heavily on slaves and other low-class workers, resulted in a very small, rich class having all influence and power. Massachusetts, in contrast, had an economy with a large middle class of “equals,” resulting in a more democratic government than that of Virginia. Overall, the first two English colonies in the Americas had extremely separate ways of creating economic and Economic development usually has a lasting influence on the political structure of any up-and-coming area. This certainly was the case for Virginia and Massachusetts. The Southern economy was based on the production of cash crops, predominantly tobacco, rice, and indigo. Crops were grown on large plantations that, by the mid 1600’s, had begun to use African slaves and lowly whites as the labor source. This meant that a lot of people worked for only a few people. Thus, the plantation owners tended to be wealthy, and they acted like it too. Many landowners hired a person in England to ship them goods that would fit the lifestyle. As a result, the South was cash poor, but the land and products owned had great potential value. The Massachusetts economy could not have been more different. Although the use of slaves and other servants did exist, it was miniscule compared to what was occurring in Virginia. Also, while plantation success depended on one system that could fail at any time, the Northern economy was more stable and diverse. In part because of the landscape, the Massachusetts colony was dependent on anything from shipbuilding, fishing, and whaling to farming, store-owning, and other types of artisan work. This allowed for a flexible economy with a large middle class that likely would survive if one market crashed. Meanwhile, if there had been a drought or drop in demand for tobacco, the whole Southern economy would have…
In early America there were several colonies but the ones that stood out the most were the New England Colonies and the Virginia colony. There were many differences, for example, New England colonies were full of families while the Virginia colony was mostly dominated by males. They mostly had differences and had few things in common.…
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The reasons for this distinct development were mostly based on the type on people from England who chose to settle in the two areas, and on the manner in which the areas were settled.

New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. As a result, New England formed a much more religious society then the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop states that their goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which represented a "pure" community, where Christianity would be pursued in the most correct manner. Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans were very religious people. In both cases, the local government was controlled by the same people who controlled the church, and the bible was the basis for all laws and regulations. From the Article of Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts it is clear that religion was the basis for general laws. It uses the phrase "being by God's providence engaged together to make a plantation", showing that everything was done in God's name. The Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut is an example of common laws being justified by the bible. Also in this document the word "community " is emphasized, just as Winthrop emphasizes it saying: "we must be knit together in this work as one man". The immigrants to New England formed very family and religiously oriented communities. Looking at the emigrant lists of people bound for New England it is easy to observe that most people came in large families, and large families support the community atmosphere. There were many children among the emigrants, and those children were taught religion from their early childhood, and therefore grew up loyal to the church, and easily controllable by the same. Any deviants from the regime were silenced or…
When is no education ever good? There is less corruption in the U.S because of Lower levels of education which are often caused by poverty are seen as a factor which encourages corrupt government practices. With less amounts of education people are not informed as to how the government works or what rights they have under the government. It is easier for corrupt office-holders to conceal corrupt activities from a poorly educated public. Uneducated citizens are less likely to be aware of corruption in local governments or how to stop it, and therefore, corruption is able to remain and spread. Without some kind of political awareness, citizens will not know which candidates to elect that are honest or dishonest or other ways to prevent corruption from taking place in their local governments. This often leads municipalities to be continually governed by one or more corrupt local officials who use patronage or nepotistic practices to stay in office or keep influence in the government for long periods of time. When local political leaders are less educated, they will be less likely to find legitimate ways to make the municipality well-structured, productive, and successful.…
I have chosen to settle in a Virginia Colony because it was known as the first colony in the world; also where the British Empire had began. The country itself is large and great. It’s much warmer than being in England, much better temperatures. There are also valleys and plains streaming with sweet streams, also the land is full of minerals and plenty of wood, which is a want from England. I am living in Williamsburg, which isn’t far from Jamestown. Down in Williamsburg they have trade post to trade Tobacco, cotton, rice, indigo, lumber, furs, and farm products.…
My state is Virginia, it was named for England’s “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth I. Virginia has had three state capitals. It’s first state capital was Jamestown which was the state capital for over 80 years, in 1699 Virginia changed its capital to Williamsburg after a fire destroyed Jamestown, in 1780 the capital was changed once again to Richmond, where it has resided ever since.…
