General Roméo Dallaire - by Daniel Almeida
General Roméo Dallaire ‘General Romeo Dallaire must bear most of the responsibility for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.’ This statement may have many different views towards it but in my opinion, I would have to disagree. There are a few points on why I believe General Romeo Dallaire shouldn’t be blamed for the genocide.
The Rwandan Genocide was an awful event that really started on 1994; it was basically a civil war. Before 1994, there was a buildup of tension in between two ethnic groups (the Hutu 's and the Tutsis), but on April 6th, of 1994, president Habyarimana 's plane was shot down by who could of been either x or it could of also been x. The death of President Habyarimana (who was a Hutu himself), was the 'spark ' of the Genocide (the war between the Hutu’s and the Tutsi’s), which led to the death of 800,000 to 1,000,000 (from both ethnic groups) people through brutal killings and rape. General Romeo Dallaire is currently a Canadian senator, but he is also known for having worked as a General for the UNAMIR from 1993 to 1994. Dallaire’s role in Rwanda was to lead the UNAMIR, into Rwanda to try and prevent the genocide from happening or developing any further than it already had (stop it.)
Many people claim that Roméo Dallaire failed to do anything against the Rwandan genocide. This could be true, but also can’t be entirely true because we have some proof that it was not Dallaire’s fault, and that the blame could be put on other people. Many people blame Dallaire for the failure of the mission because; * He did not take any actions against the radio station in Kigali (broadcasting and causing hatred in-between the two groups), and that he could of just simply sent out troops to destroy the radio station. * Blamed for the loss of 10 Belgium soldiers and did not take action when he passed by the two soldiers at Kigali
The reason that General Romeo Dallaire had for not helping the two soldiers which he saw being held hostage at Kigali was because he

Senator Romeo Dallaire was a Lieutenant-General in the Canadian army in 1946. He was sent to Rwanda in 1993 to enforce peace agreements between the Hutu’s and the Tutsis. He was more or less set up for failure however because he did not have nearly as much soldiers as he needed. The inevitable happened and Senator Dallaire found himself as a witness to one of the greatest tragedies we have seen this century. The result of this “peace agreement” ended up with over 800,000 people dead and about 1.4 million in refuge. The most griping story that Dallaire told was when he was getting out of his army truck and was greeted by an eleven year old boy pointing an AK-47 (rifle) into his nostril. To this day Senator Dallaire swears the only reason this boy did not kill him right then and there was because he was holding a candy bar in his hand.…

It doesn’t end there; the world proceeded to take it out on the government for accelerating the genocide when it had been everyone’s fault. Tell me, where was the world when Burundi and Rwanda’s rivers ran with innocent blood? How is it that the cries of women and children went unheard? If I may be so bold, I would say that the genocide might have actually been for the greater good because it serves as a painful reminder “that mass slaughters hadn’t been prevented in places all over the world – and they weren’t being prevented now” (248). Not only did the genocide open the eyes of the world to the horrors mankind is capable of, but it also gave us a ‘natural experiment’ that can be used as a reference point to promote prosperity in countries on the verge of civil…

Firstly, Romeo Dallaire has been continuously fighting for human rights and world peace around the world. In 1993, Roméo Dallaire took command in the U.N peacekeeping mission in Rwanda. He desperately tried to prevent the imminent genocide despite orders from the United Nations to fall back. “The genocide occurred swiftly and massively. In the 100 days between 6 April and 16 July 1994, an estimated 800,000 men, women and children were brutally killed” (Bonikowsky, Romeo Dallaire). In spite of this, “Dallaire saved over 200,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates…

The Rwandan Genocide occurred during the latter part of the Rwandan Civil War after the assassination of former president Juvénal Habyarimana. Close associates of Habyarimana believed the Tutsis to be behind his assassination, thus prompting procession of a planned extermination of the Tutsis (Des Forges, pp.6). Nonetheless, the systematic killing was a result of a multitude of events for which the assassination served as a breaking…

Genocide, and act that said to never occur again by the Genocide Convention, has come through time and time again. Each genocide, including the Rwandan Genocide, leaving countless numbers of men, women, and children wounded and lifeless. The imperialism brought by the Belgian empire onto Rwanda was the start of the deadly massacre. The lack of international aid from the rest of the world caused the genocide to last longer and longer eventually ending after 100 days. Finally a young population gave the people of Rwanda a little more motivation to start the horrifying mass killing. Imperialism, lack of international aid, and a young population were all factors in the start of the genocide but clearly imperialism is the most significant which without the genocide would have never started.…

In conclusion, it is clear that there are many contributing factors that acted as a catalyst to the Rwandan genocide. During a time where political instability was the only type of political structure, it is apparent that the rise of anti-political groups, propaganda meant to influence civilians towards taking a side, and colonial oppression causing a polarizing between the Hutus and Tutsis, all played a large role in the start of the genocide. Despite this, it is apparent that there was not one cause, but instead a melting pot of different issues that spilled over into greater…

The Rwanda genocide has been known as one of humanity’s biggest failure in terms of scale of casualties and course of action taken by developed nations. An estimate of about 800,000 – 1,000,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus’ were killed by Hutu extremists. This resulted in the exodus of 2,000,000 Tutsis’ from Rwanda to countries surrounding the nation, this event was known as the Great Lake refugee crisis. What was Canada’s role in combating the Rwanda genocide? Canada took the role as the leader of the attempted prevention of the genocide that took place in Rwanda. The nation was the driving force in the United Nations. Although these efforts could not prevent the devastation of the conflict, it signified Canada’s relentless efforts in Rwanda…

The Hutus were towards the government and destroyed a lot of Tutsis lives that rebelled the government. Representatives of the International committee of the Red cross identified that every week of the genocide more people have been killed, in numbers of thousands of bodies. The United Nations security council decided, at the Urging of Belgium to remove peace keeping forces even while the killings continued. The UN withdrew most troops and limited actions of tiny force of 450 soldiers who stayed behind. There was a lot of International Media and Mark Doyle of the BBC was suppose to report about what was happening in Rwanda and even though it was his job, he didn’t tell the news anything. Mbaye Diagne was also a U.N Soldier and he took things into his own hands to help the tutsis. Laura Lane describes the Rwandan Genocide as evil. “She says, its not the color of their skin, not male or female and being in Rwanda, some of the things you saw were women going after their own children. It was indescribable, but you can see it in their eyes, the blackness you cannot explain.” A genocide means with intent to destroy whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial or a religious group. The tutsis were being prosecuted because of something of which they were or in which they believed in, which should not be a crime. Even when warnings were received, the United Nations ignored them. UN force commander in Rwanda, Major General Romeo Dallaire asked for protection and additional troops to prevent the planned violence from…
