Journal writing is an informal approach to developing students’ writing skills. The assessment is primarily based on improvement and completing a minimum number of pages (5 pages skipping lines) by the established deadline. My feedback to students is focused on interaction with what they have written as opposed to correcting syntax or orthography. Since this is a dialogue journal, I respect the confidential nature of what students choose to write. Be prepared for students to share anecdotes that may be sensitive in content. This is a great way to get to know your students on a more personal level. I do not place a value judgment on their ideas or how compelling their argument may be. I am concerned with improvement from one journal collection to the next. Ease of expression and sophistication of vocabulary are taken into account in the grade that is assigned. One strategy, as a focus activity, is to start the class with one of the journal topics on the board or overhead when the students are entering the classroom. After a 6-7 minute writing exercise, have the students turn to the person seated next to them and converse about what they have just written. Next, solicit opinions from the class as a whole to engage the class in a discussion in Spanish. This activity focuses on the synthesis of writing, speaking and listening while combining the interpersonal and presentational modes of communication. Students write the 5-page entries outside of class. Ideally, the class will finish the 70 pages in the notebook (skipping lines) by the date of the AP exam. I have found that the spiral-bound composition books are both inexpensive and practical. Different colored composition books are used in rotation, so that the grading is not overwhelming. For example, I buy red, blue and green composition books, collecting one color each week in a cycle throughout the semester. Students will…

We’ve all been told at one point or another that, ‘life is short’. Yet, we all just want to grow up, to be older and more mature, to get help us get over something we wish we hadn’t done. Sometimes we just need to stop always thinking about our regrets and our future and realize how far we really have come with our own individual lives. It seems like just yesterday I was walking into the massive three story Patuxent High School, getting lost and asking upper classmen, “Where’s Mrs. Sypa’s room?”, and now I know it like the back of my hand. Now, as a junior I look back and think just how far I really have come.…

101 IELTS Speaking Part Two Topic cards that tie in with IELTS Speaking Part One Students often find moving from practising the question and answer format of speaking about themselves in IELTS Speaking Part One to speaking more generally for 1 or 2 minutes non-stop in IELTS Speaking Part Two to be quite a jump. Luckily, the 6 to 8 most popular topics in IELTS Speaking Part One (e.g. Friends and Families) can also come up in Part Two (although the same topic is never used twice in the same test). You can therefore easily use easily use both Part One and Part Two exam practice questions in the same class, using the Part One questions as a warm up for the Part Two presentations. It is not possible to say which topics are most likely to come up in the IELTS Speaking Test Part Two, but the most typical questions for each of the topics that are the same as IELTS Speaking Part One are given near the top of each section below. The topic cards further down each section are ones that are more difficult to answer and/ or less likely to be in the exam. For example, it is very unlikely that students will get a task where they have to speak mainly about the future like “Talk about a subject you would like to study in the future…”. The reason for including tasks like this is to give students practice in answering a question that is very different from any they have practiced before (there is about a 50% chance of this happening in the exam, however much preparation they have done), and to help teachers tie IELTS Speaking Part Two tasks in with any topic covered in class.…
