Setting- Its now two weeks before the election, the odds are against president Lincoln, he fears he will lose. The war has not been going good for him he lost 3 of the most recent battles and the Union has sustained a heavy amount of loses, the public have been turning away from lincoln for his radical policies. The only hope he has of winning rests on the shoulders of
General William T Sherman and his army.
Shermans objective is to capture Georgia, he first has to defeat General
Joseph E Johnston and his southern army.
Sherman is currently marching his army through the chattanooga otherwise known as the gateway to the south, if Sherman can capture this he has a good chance of defeating Johnstons army.
Sherman captured the Gateway
and has now pushed towards his goal, he has won a series of decisive battles and now captured Georgia and because of this push into southern territory, it means that the Union army has a very huge advantage of winning the war.
For Lincoln this meant everything, He won the election with 400,000 popular votes, he was the first president to get reelected since Andrew Jackson.
Because of the victory in Atlanta, the tide of the war turned to the south losing quick. this is the big reason Lincoln won and by luck.
