A Separate Peace is a book about Gene Forrester’s relationship with Phineas, whom he calls Finny, and his experiences at the Devon School. Gene goes through many difficult times while attending Devon. Although he does not see it at the time, Finny helps Gene eventually find peace even with the war and difficulties at Devon. In A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, Gene finds peace through both his experiences at Devon and his friendship with Finny. Gene’s relationship with Finny has a big impact on his life. For example, Finny is always trying to keep Gene from thinking about the war. Gene remembers, “for hours sometimes for days I fell without realizing it into the private explanation of the world” (Knowles 123). In his own way, Finny was able to make Gene forget about everything around them. Eventually Gene realizes that he has been blind to how bad war is because he really only sees what goes on at Devon. For example, Gene felt “we members of the Class of 1943 were moving very fast toward the war now, so fast that there were casualties even before we reached it, a mind was clouded and a leg was broken…The air around us was filled with much worse things” (187-188). Gene realizes that there is a war where bad things can happen, but he is sheltered by the Devon School where he is really living in his own little world. Eventually Gene seems to understand the difference between his school and the war. “I think we reminded them of what peace was like, we boys of sixteen…We were careless and wild” (23-24). Gene knows there is a war being fought around him. However, he was able to get carried away with everything that was going on at Devon. Even with the war going on around him, Gene experiences small glimpses of peace while at Devon inside this sheltered
