What Is Genetic Engineering?
Genetic Engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. The goal is to add one or more new traits that are not already found in that organism. When a gene for a desirable trait is taken from one organism and inserted into another, it gives the recipient organism the ability to express that trait.

How Does Genetic Engineering
Work
Find an organism that contains the desired trait

Item 1

The DNA is extracted from that organism.

Item 2

The one desired gene must be located and copied from thousands of genes that were extracted. This is called gene cloning.

Item 3

The gene may be modified slightly to work in a more desirable way once inside the recipient organism Item 4
Item 5

Item 6

The new genes are called transgene which are delivered into cells of the recipient organism. This is called transformation.

Once a transgenic organism has been created, traditional breeding is used to improve the characteristics of the final product. Cutting Edge Discoveries

In this lab, we performed a genetic transformation through the process of gene transfer. Gene transfer involves the insertion of a gene into an organism. The gene to be inserted is usually contained in a plasmid, which is relatively small, circular non-chromosomal DNA molecule typically found in bacteria. Once the plasmid containing the gene is inserted into the organism, it is absorbed into the organism’s own genetic code. After this occurs, the newly introduced gene begins coding for proteins, giving the organism a new trait. This process of genetic transformation is often used in the field of biotechnology. For example, genes that code for proteins that protect against herbicide are often added to crops such as corn so that farmers can target…

Genetic engineering is the alteration of the genetic material of an organism. The alteration mainly occurs in the genes of plants to genetically modify the plants to the farmer’s needs, however, scientist have been studying how to genetically modify humans. Mario Capecchi is a scientist, and one of Watson’s students, who owns a lab that genetically enhances mice, with hopes to later be used on people. In his lab, Capecchi resynthesizes genes to…

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through the means of Genetic Engineering. It is when a gene from one organism is taken and inserted into another in order to improve and produce a desired trait for that certain organism. Sometimes it is known as "transgenic" for transfer of genes.…

Genetically modified organisms are made moving the DNA from one species to another. DNA contains genes which code for proteins. For plants and bacteria; restriction enzymes are used to cut a DNA segment from a desired gene source and a bacterium plasmid. They are joined using ligase enzymes and inserted into the plant chromosome or host bacterium. For animals the recombinant DNA is injected into an embryo and transferred to a recipient mother. The organisms will now express a new protein. Proteins determine form and metabolism. Genetic engineering changes the natural DNA of living things, cutting across species boundaries.…

Genetic engineering works by physically removing a gene from one organism and inserting it into another, giving it the ability to express the trait encoded by that gene. It is like taking a single recipe out of a cookbook and placing it into another cookbook. First, find an organism that naturally contains the desired trait. The DNA is extracted from that organism. This is like taking out the entire cookbook. The one desired gene (recipe) must be located and copied from thousands of genes that were extracted.…

Andrew Niccol’s Sci-fi Thriller, Gattaca, is a dystopian world where a person’s identity is determined by their genetic quotient. In Gattaca the genetically engineered part of society is viewed as perfect while the naturally conceived are viewed as invalids or “de-gene-rates”. Contradictorily, Niccol attempts to demonstrate to the audience that nature, with its flaws, is preferred over an error-free, genetically engineered society. Niccol does this by contrasting the natural and scientific worlds through the overarching techniques of setting, and characterisation and other filmic specific devices.…
