Genetically Modified Foods Persuasive Speech
The food you are eating is killing you. These foods are genetically enhanced to make them last longer taste better, and shield themselves from pests and weeds. Genetically modified foods are in everything, you ate them for breakfast and you will eat them for lunch. You need to learn about these foods to save your family and friends from the terrible effects of these foods. You will learn what these foods are, the bad effects of them, and what will happen if we don't take action and put an end to them. These man-made foods are putting our health, wildlife, and ecosystems in danger.

A tomato called the FlavrSavr was the first genetically altered food to be put on the market. Genetically modified foods are derived from genetically modified organisms. They have specific changes introduced tot their DNA by genetic engineering. Little bits of DNA is drawn from the organism, then biotechnologists make changes to the DNA to change the characteristics of the organism. After the biotechnologist is finished changing the DNA, they inject the new DNA back into the organism. Just by changing small things in the foods we eat, we can have significant consequences for humans, plants, animals, and the ecosystem.

That may just be a few people, but the numbers will only grow as we eat more and more genetically enhanced foods. Certain types of cancers and birth defects have also been proven to be caused by eating GM foods. Over the past 20 years, the chance of getting deadly food allergies in children has tripled. Parents have to check for things their children are allergic to in everything they buy. None of thee enhanced foods are worth all of these bad health

“Biotechnology has been used for more than 6,000 years for lots of interesting and practical purposes: making food such as bread and cheese, preserving dairy products and fermenting beer” (Biotechnology - Promising a Brighter Future for the World). Although we do not always realize it, biotechnology is a huge part of our everyday lives, from the medicine we use to keep us healthy, the fuel we use to take us where we need to go, and even the food we eat and the sources it comes from, biotechnology already plays, and must continue to play, an invaluable role in meeting our needs. Biotechnology uses cellular and bio-molecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. It has granted us the ability to overcome physiological barriers and to exchange genetic materials among living organisms. Genetically modified foods are the latest contribution of biotechnology. These foods are being made by inserting genes from an external source such as viruses, bacteria, animals or plants into a usually unrelated species. The use of recombinant DNA technology has the potential to allow humans to create desired and designed foods.…

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. However, without proper labeling, the big issue of concern is, they do not know how to avoid them if they wanted to.…

A genetically modified food or GM food product is defined as “meat and edible plants modified through genetic engineering” (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). Furthermore, human beings have engaged in the process of genetically modifying plants and animals, with selective breeding practices within identical species, “since the beginning of civilization” (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). However, current methods of genetic modification can cross species boundaries, which require suppressive techniques to ensure the foreign genes are accepted by the target plant or animal (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). Indeed, this process has led to significant debates regarding the safety of the products that contain GM ingredients and whether these products should be clearly labeled to assist consumers in making an informed choice.…

A GMO is created when DNA from one organism is combined with another organism’s DNA to make one molecule. Scientists do this by cutting and joining DNA from different sources. This forms a new set of genes. They then transfer it into the organism so it has the modified genes. (http://www.i-sis.org.uk/FAQ.php, 11/30/09) With genetic engineering they can make bigger and more nutritious fruit and vegetables. Human embryos can be genetically modified in case it might have a chance of having a disease. If breast cancer is commonly found in a family the scientists can engineer the embryo so that it does not receive that trait. Trees and fruits that are genetically modified can be grown so that pesticides grow naturally in them. Sometimes scientists do not have enough of a material to use it in the lab so they use Bacterial Transformation. There are five steps of Bacterial Transformation. The first step is competency which is preparing the bacterial cells to receive DNA. This step is getting the pores to open up so they allow the genes needed to be put in. Step two is transformation in which pGLO genes (a gene from jelly fish that glows green) are inserted via the pores. Step three is growth in which the substance is just growing, eating, and reproducing. The fourth step is isolation in which you separate the newly transformed cells from the entire population of untransformed cells. Finally, step five is expression which is the phenotypic expression in which arabinose is needed to allow the gene to transcribe and make Green Fluorescent protein (GFP). The arabinose is an on and off switch for the Green fluorescent protein. (In class worksheet, 11/30/09).…

Genetic Modification (GM) or Genetic Engineering (GE) is the process of manipulating genomes from an organism, such as plants and animals, to another using the techniques of biotechnology. Genetic modified foods are created from the procedures of genetic engineering and play an important role in the society’s lifestyle. GM foods can be both beneficial and disadvantageous to the society and environment. It can be advantageous as it can improve agricultural production, help improve nutrition in the body and also contribute to medical research. However it can also be disadvantageous as it may harm organisms in the environment, be a factor of human illnesses and its cost inefficiency.…

Since Genetically Modified Organisms have been introduced to food industry, there has been a substantial increase in food allergies in children and adults. Studies have shown how proteins produced by engineered plants (also known as GMOs) are different than the way they should be. According to Thierry Vrain in “Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food”, “Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing the engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins” (Vrain Par. 9). The human body works based on the proteins that come from the food you eat, and are crucially needed to help the body function. The proteins that you take in, work in different ways, some are used to build cardiac muscle or helps oxygen to every part of the body. Once the body begins taking these toxic proteins in, it will begin to break down the immune system your body has developed and will eventually leave you with no immune system leaving your body vulnerable to illness and diseases. Besides the health issues with proteins being genetically modified and causing health problems with the immune system, the amount of food allergies have increased as well. In an article by Organic Consumers Association, “GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions”, “There is concern that GM foods pose an allergy risk. Currently the list of GM food products intersect with the eight most common food allergens: eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat” (“GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions” Par. 5). Children are now missing vital nutrients and having to turn to taking supplements for the proteins they are not receiving. It is not just children who are having to seek extra supplements for their dietary needs…

“In the United States alone, GMOs make up about 70-80% of the foods we consume. Most foods that contain GMOs are processed foods.” Gmo’s are in everything we eat. Everytime you look in your pantry or fridge you see foods that have been genetically modified to change the appearance, size, and taste. In order to genetically modify something it has to be changed by chemicals that are unhealthy and damaging to our body. 70-80% is too high. New laws should be made to lower the amount of foods that have gmo’s in it.…

One thing that people are worried about is the fact that these new advances "may be skewed to interests of rich countries" (Human Genome Project). GM foods are supposed to help the countries that are in need, but if the foods are only going to go to the rich countries it makes the people question if these foods are even beneficial. Some officials even say that GM foods are "...not mandatory in some countries." The world's biggest countries don't even need GM foods which would mean that only the little developing, and non-developing, countries would actually need to use GM foods. Little developing countries, and non-developed countries are very few which would mean that GM foods would be making very little beneficial impact to the…

How would you feel if I told you that the food you're eating was made in a science lab? Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are the outcome of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially manipulated into the genes of an uncorrelated plant or animal. Crops are often genetically modified to be resistant to pesticides so farmers would be able to spray them without harming the crop itself. However, there are many consequences regarding consumers’ health and environmental problems. Many people question the safety of consuming genetically modified organisms. Companies should acknowledge that their product is genetically modified by placing a label on the product because customers have a right to know. Furthermore, there are several serious health complications that may rise to the consumer. And finally, genetically modifying organisms should be limited by being placed in a controlled environment to prevent contamination with other species because it can be harmful to the environment in several ways.…

Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs, are “living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering,” (The Non-GMO Project). While genetic engineering has the capability of being beneficial to our society, The Non-GMO Project argues that it “creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods,” (The Non-GMO Project). GMOs are very prevalent in our contemporary food industry; The Non-GMO Project website states that “in the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food,” (The Non-GMO Project). New traits are introduced to…

Do people ever truly know what is in their food? When they pop those irresistible fries into their mouths, are they really just eating a potato? According to researchers at Rutgers University, one in four people do not know that most of the food they consume is genetically modified (Hallman). “Genetic modification is the process of forcing genes from one species into another entirely unrelated species” (“GMO Defined”). Although some find genetically modified organisms to be beneficial to society, such designs are harmful to the human body and deficient to farmers.…

Food has been one of the three requirements of life for humans since the birth of a person. Centuries ago, production of food only consisted of hunting, harvesting and farming, and usually it would take a long time before these foods arrived at the dining tables of families. However, toady, technology has allowed the mass production of food. Unfortunately, the market has taken advantage of technology, not letting us know how food is made, leading to the birth of genetically modified Organisms (GMOs). GMOs are widely used in a range of foods today. Though most people are unaware of this, GMOs even exist in some of their favourite food products, especially fast foods. Many reports and illnesses have arised from the consumption of GM-foods, specifically…

The controversial issue of genetically modified foods, commonly known as GM’s, has only gained the attention of millions, since it became a prominent and highly debated global issue. Genetically modified foods are created when the genes of an organism are engineered and modified to create a new or enhanced version of that organism. The process of using different genes from different sources to genetically modify foods led to public outcry and sometimes, praise. People in support of genetically modified foods claims it will enhance the quality of the food, improve the food’s resistance to pests and other harmful elements, lower food costs, and also increase food security for the future. However, those opposed to genetically modified foods claim…
