There is insufficient research on their long term effect on humans, to make a judgment on whether or not they are safe. The U.S. and Canadian governments, though, have approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. The effects on humans of consuming these new combinations of proteins produced in GMOs are unknown and have not been studied. In one experiment, multiple generations of hamsters were fed a diet of GM soy; by the third generation, they were losing the ability to produce offspring, producing about half as many pups as the non-GM soy group. FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety studies but they were ignored. Today the market is filled with 75% of genetically modified foods, that we are uncertain of their safety.
Over 75% of America's food is produced with genetically modified ingredients. Scientist genetically modify an organism by inserting DNA from a plant, animal or bacterium into an unrelated organism to get it to produce the desired traits. There is much debate about whether GMOs are safe, they are mainly innocent until proven guilty. There is not enough long term studies and solid evidence to show that they are safe or unsafe for
