Genetics for Chodes
Genetics Paper Each human in the world is created both separate and unique. Although members of a family may possess common traits, each member has their own individuality. Genetics allows for a creation of a unique individual. Chromosomes, meiosis, and fertilization are essential parts of genetics vital to the development of a distinct organism. The effect of each allows for a world in which no human is equal. To begin, chromosomes in genetics plays a key role in individuality. In genetics, organized DNA wrapped and compacted in a molecule is a chromosome. There are twenty-two homologous pairs of chromosomes and one pair of homologous sex chromosomes. Homologous chromosomes have the same genes at the same loci (location), but may contain different alleles. Alleles are the specific characteristics of the gene. These alleles can be dominant or recessive. A dominant allele has a different phenotype than a recessive allele. Phenotypes are simply the observable traits seen in a living organism. An example of phenotype is a dominant allele for hair color is Brown, while the recessive allele for hair color is Blonde. They both are for the same gene, but are different outcomes of the gene. A dominant allele overrides a recessive allele. In order to have a recessive phenotype, two recessive alleles need to be given to the offspring. Figure 1 represents a pair of homologous chromosomes. Although the alleles are located at the same location on each chromosome, each has a different allele. Different alleles allow for a separate organism to be created. Different alleles on chromosomes alters the genotype and phenotype of each individual of a family. In addition to chromosomes, meiosis also plays a key role in the development of a diverse individual. Meiosis is a single cell dividing into four genetically unique reproductive cells. Meiosis occurs in the reproductive structures of all living organisms including both male and female organisms. The process begins with a

Genes are traits that give living things their own certain characteristic. Genes are inherited from the P generation to the F1 generation. As genes are passed down, they are given traits that are either contain all dominant genes known as homozygous dominant, or both dominant and recessive also known as heterozygous and last is homozygous recessive, meaning that the genes are both recessive. Dominant alleles are always present even if they also contain one recessive and the only way to express the recessive trait, both alleles must be recessive for the trait to be expressed. During sexual reproduction, 2 parents with different traits are crossbreed, which encourage cultural diversity out of the population. The offspring of the P1 generation is also call the hybrid since they have a mixed of traits from both parents. There are 2 type of crossbreeding first is…

The dominant trait means that whenever there is a copy of B, then this trait will be observable in the organism. Meaning, if one has an allele of either BB, his genotype will be homozygous dominant, therefore, his phenotype will be brown eyes. It can be concluded that phenotype is directly relevant to the genotype of an individual. Genotype is the code that defines what the phenotype will be.…

Meiosis is the process of cell division in which gametes are produced. It results in four haploid (IN) cells from two diploid (2N) cells (Cyr). In meiosis I, crossing over and independent assortment of the chromosomes occur. These two processes increase the genetic variation within the cell either benefiting or hurting the cell’s ability to adapt (natural selection). After these two events have occurred, the chromosomes will then proceed through all four stages and produce two daughter cells (Cyr). In meiosis II, the two daughter cells each again proceed…

On the other hand, there are many contrasts such that there is only one cell division in mitosis as there is two cell divisions in meiosis. These phases are called meiosis one and meiosis two. Another contrast is that mitosis produces only two daughter cells whereas meiosis produces four haploid daughter cells. These daughter cells come out exactly the same in mitosis but not in meiosis because the chromosomes exchange DNA strips with one another and four daughter cells are produced to mix the DNA. Typically, mitosis is a form of reproduction in prokaryotic organisms because they only have one cell whereas meiosis is a form of reproduction in eukaryotic organisms because they have many cells. In other words, mitosis is a form of asexual reproduction where one cell splits and forms two new cells and meiosis is a form of sexual reproduction that requires the union of a sperm and egg for this process to occur.…

In every organism, we obtain one allele from each parent. Alleles are types of genes that can be identified on the chromosomes, which are in the nucleus of the cell. Alleles are either dominant or recessive. Dominant alleles are the ones that are usually phenotypically expressed, while the recessive alleles are usually silenced by the dominant…

Meiosis is the process by which cells divide and create living creatures. Without meiosis we cannot have the process of mitosis, which is the process by which cells of tissue are created for living creatures. When meiosis occurs 4 daughter cells are created, while only 2 are created in mitosis. With the creation of 2 daughter cells the new cells will be similar to the parent cell, but will have differences, as there more parent cells involved. When mitosis occurs the daughter cells will be identical to the parent cell, since only 1 cell is involved. Meiosis is needed for sexual reproduction, while mitosis is needed for general growth, repair, and cellular reproduction of the body. The process of mitosis is not involved in any sex cell, and meiosis is not involved in any cell with the exception of sex cells. Since meiosis has more cells involved (parent cells) this process has a few more steps than what mitosis does. There are several similarities between the process of mitosis and meiosis. For example both processes occur at the cellular level. Both processes share genetic material from the parent cell to the daughter cell. In conclusion without meiosis we would not be created and therefore not need the process of meiosis, because cells would not be able to form.…

Meiosis produces haploid, diploid, and gametes cells. The gamete cells are known as sex cells that occur in the reproductive organs, and meiosis has sex cells whereas mitosis does not (Simon, Reece, & Dickey, 2010). The diploid cells split up to form four haploids (form of cell division that most eukaryotic cells undergo), however, only half of the chromosomes are the parent cells and occurs in all organisms that have sex cells (Simon, Reece, & Dickey, 2010). Ex: humans, animals, most fungi, and plants.…

Variation plays a vital role in human survival. Variation occurs in the process of meiosis. Meiosis is the process in which human sex cells, called gametes, are produced. Meiosis starts with a parent cell, called a diploid, replicating its DNA. After the DNA is replicated, the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell where each pair touches each other and genetic information from the alleles are shuffled and exchanged, a process called crossing-over. The crossing-over over of chromosomes results in what is called recombination, where genetic information from the maternal chromosome (chromosome from the mother) is now on the paternal chromosome (chromosome from the father) or vice versa. Crossing-over and recombination is what causes genetic variation, reshuffling of the chromosomes and then exchanging genetic information. After the chromosomes are lined up and genetic information is exchanged, the parent cell then splits into two identical daughter cells. The two daughter cells have 23 sets of chromosomes, totaling to 46 chromosomes in all, which is the same amount of chromosomes as the parent cell. Unlike the parent cells, the daughter cells do not…

Mitosis and meiosis are important, because mitosis is a type of sexual reproduction which enables a cell to reproduce two new genetically identical daughter cells from a single parent cell (Pruitt and Underwood, 2006). During this process mitosis has the function of permitting cells to replace ones that are worn out, damaged, or need to be replicated for single cells organism. Where mitosis is asexual cellular reproduction, meiosis not only multiplying the numbers of cells by cell division, but it reduces the number of chromosomes in each daughter cell to one-half of the number before meiosis (Pruitt and Underwood, 2006). Meiosis also permits chromosomes of more complex organisms to be passed down from parent cells to daughter cells for genetic diversity.…

Mitosis and meiosis are both important to a living organism because they represent cell divisions that are very important to every living organism because without cell division all living organisms would fail to reproduce, eventually dying out. Cell division plays a very important role in the life cycle of a cell. Mitosis and meiosis are important to living organism because they help living organisms to grow, develop, and reproduce. Mitosis is a type of asexual reproduction, which enables a cell to reproduce two new genetically identical daughter cells from a single parent cell. During the process, mitosis provides the necessary function of permitting cells to be replaced once they are worn out, damaged, or need to be replicated for single cell organism reproduction (Pruitt & Underwood, 2006). Meiosis is “the process by which certain sex cells are created” (Groleau, 2001). Meiosis occurs in a particular arrangement of one’s cells to create eggs and sperm. Meiosis involves the reproduction of two parent cells of a specific type to create four daughter cells, which have genetic material from both parent cells. Meiosis plays an important part in organism reproduction because it permits chromosomes of more complex organisms to be passed down from parent cells to daughter cells in a way that allows for an endless potential for genetic diversity.…

Genetic Variation are the differences within individuals in a population. They are what make us genetically different from one another. Genetic variation occur because of mutations in our DNA and recombination. There are multiple types of mutation such as point mutations or chromosome mutations. Point mutations are the most common where only a single DNA nucleotide is affected. Within point mutations are frameshift and substitution. Frameshift mutations are when a base is either added or deleted. The ribosome that reads the DNA, reads every base 3 bases at a time. If a base is added, there will be a left over base. If a base is deleted, there will be two left over bases that will not be read. There is also substitution which is when one base is switched for another sometimes it has not affect since that same base might also code for the same codon. Other times, the base will have an affect on the amino acids as it is ended earlier that intended. Another reason for mutations is recombination. Recombination is the process of re-combining things. Recombination happens sexual reproduction and during meiosis. Mutations that happen during sexual reproduction is random fertilization. It is when any sperm and egg meet randomly during fertilization. Recombination also happens during sperm and egg production or meiois. Mutations also occur during meiosis. Meiosis is what makes the gametes or the sperm and egg.…
