At the age of 16, Temujin married Borte, which created an alliance between the Konkirat tribe and his own. Temujin had multiple wives, as well as many children. His male children he had eventually came to power after Temujin’s death. As said earlier, Temujin was a very successful military leader and conqueror. Temujin began his ascent to power by slowly growing an army to about 20,000 men. His goal was to destroy traditional divisions among the various tribes and unite the Mongols under his rule (Biography-Genghis Khan). One of Temujin’s first conquests was to avenge his father. Not only did Temujin beat the Tatar army, he decimated the army. Using his brilliant military tactics and ruthless brutality, Temujin ordered every Tatar male over three feet tall to be killed. Temujin’s army were very accurate with the bow and arrow, and also very good on horses. They were allowed to maneuver their horses with their feet while being able to use their hands to shoot with the bow and arrow. As said before, many people only think that Temujin was just a killer and conqueror, but that is certainly incorrect. He was also a very enlightened ruler. Some of Temujin’s major accomplishments is that he abolished torture. He was also one of the first rulers to embrace religious freedom, which was almost never heard of during his time. He ran his kingdoms meritocratically, which means some people whose progress is based on ability and talent rather than on class privilege or wealth. Temujin also loved learning and helping younger people to learn. He worked hard to improve women's rights, they played an important role in the social and political life.
