Transformation of Olaf
Olaf Turvik, who lived on the outskirts of Park Rapids, Minnesota, was an insecure man before his to be wife shows up. Olaf, who has shown many qualities and traits. But his insecurities about himself at the beginning before he meets inge, then the transition into affection shown towards her stands out as his most admiring qualities and traits.
“He wonderered what she looked like, but then again, he was not in a position to be too picky about that sort of thing.” Olaf who had received a letter from his parents about a young German woman. While inside, Olaf realizes that Inge needs papers, birth certificate and citizenship papers. Only having her birth certificate, they are not allowed to get married, Inge begins to cry. Olaf reaches out and bushes away a teardrop, making her burst into real tears. Olaf then begins to draw his hand back but then reached back and held her with both hands. “Ich verstehe,” Olaf said softly,”I Understand.” Olaf shows his first step of love towards Inge. The next day, Olaf takes Inge back to the Courthouse to attempt to get married again. The clerk denies them marriage because Inge was simply German, at the time the War against the Germans had just ended making the US concerned. The Clerk also stated that they need references from people she knew in Germany and Norway. In this time they waited the became closer and closer. Inge became to grow comfortable around Olaf. Olaf would catch Inge begin to smile. They began to stay up later and later. When the letters came, they rushed to the courthouse. The judge overlooked the letters, meanwhile Inge began to squeeze olaf’s hang with increasing strength until her fingers dug into his palm and hurt him; he did not tell her, however. The judge decides that the letters are not sufficient, sending them back home in silence. That night Inge joined Olaf in the barn, during that time waiting for letters Inge and Olaf became married in a different way by body,
