A. Purpose of investigation

The key question I’ve been set to answer is:

What factors affect the gradient of the beach?

I have broken the question down into a set of mini hypotheses which I’ll try to answer. This should help me to focus on certain techniques and help me to draw conclusions on the evidence I have collected.

1. The larger pebbles tend to build up making the slope bumpy(less steep) however smaller ones will spread out and even out more making the slope smoother, steeper.

2. The wind is stronger in some parts of porlock bay than others, making waves stronger and more powerful. I think wind is the most important factor.

3. I think the steepest beach will be Hurlstone because it’s the end of the beach where pebbles will be at their smallest and roundest due to erosion.

4. I think the gentlest beach will be gore point because it’s at the beginning of the beach where the pebbles will be at their largest and more angular.

The study took place at Porlock bay in Somerset, Southwest England (see maps on next page). Porlock bay is a coastal area that’s sited near Devon and the Bristol Channel. The study took place at three coastal sites which were Gore Point, Porlock Weir, and Hurlstone. This area is the world’s 2nd largest tidal wave range place so it was a good place to study as it has strong tidal waves. It also

Montara beach was cold and slightly windy climate when we arrived, the tide was slightly low and the sand was soft in some spots and stiff in others. These are examples of how humans have physically impacted the beach and its structure. The flight deck is a human residential block of units on the edge of the beach. This unit block has massively affected the shaping and the beachfront of that area of Collaroy beach. The coastal processes that are threatening the erosion of the beachfront developments are, Erosion/Accretion Cycle (or sediment budget), destructive storm waves and king tides. These processes are slowly undermining the building and causing the dune under the units to become unstable and dangerous for people living in and around them. Also the salts from the waves blowing onto the units causes the metal to rust and the foundation of the building and balcony handrails to be at risk of being unreliable and…

    * The sand dunes on the beaches. This area is affected by wind erosion as well as the tides if adequate vegetative cover is not present. The main type of erosion, from the sea, takes the sand from the sand dunes as well as the rest of the beach in a rip. The sand is then pulled out to sea where it forms a sand bar. On calmer days, the sand is brought back to the beach.…
