1. According to the Aztec poet quoted on p457, did the Aztecs rate the Spanish a “10” (great overlords), or a somewhat lesser score?
They did not like the Spanish, so a somewhat lesser score.
2. In the late 1400s, Spanish & Portuguese navigators bumped into the Americas. What were they looking for, & did they know they had made a mistake?
They looked for an ocean route to Asia, preferably a westward route across the Atlantic Ocean. They did not know that they made a mistake.
3. What was the purpose of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494, why was it “chaired” by the Pope, & what did the treaty establish?
The Treaty of Tordesillas in 1914 was established avoid war between Portugal and Spain because both nations claimed the right to any lands they explored. The treaty drew a Line of Demarcation that ran from north to south, about 1770 km west of the Azores in the Atlantic. It gave Spain the right to claim all non-Christian lands west of the line. Portugal claimed the lands east of the line.
4. Why is Portuguese ONLY spoken in Brazil, while the rest of Latin America it is Spanish?
In 1500, Portuguese explorer Pedro Cabral landed on the east coast of South America in what is today Brazil, and because this land lay east of the Line of Demarcation, Cabral claimed it for Portugal.
5. What was Magellan attempting to do when he “hit the dust” in the Philippines in 1520?
He hoped to find a passage around South America, to make a profitable trade route to Asia.
6. When the Spanish (a chap called Balboa, to be precise) clambered across the mountains of Central America, what did they find on the west side?
