Lifting Condinsation Level
Topic: Atmospheric Moisture
Chapter 6

Location: Newport Beach
Description: Lifting Condinsation Level or LCL

Off the coast of southern california we often get an Atmospheric occurrence called the

“Lifting Condinsation Level”. This proccess is caused when the rising air from the earth

experiences a drop in temperature. This drop in temperature is caused by the decrease of

pressure in the surrounding atmosphere. The relative formula for this rising and cooling is

5.5 degrees F for each 1,000 feet. When the air raises high enough and cools down to the

point where its relitive humidity is 100% a water droplet is formed, this is its “DEW

POINT”. You can see this Dew Point or Lifting Condinsation Level when the clouds in

the sky look like they are sitting on an invisible table in the sky.

    3. During a summer visit to New Orleans, you stay in an air-conditioned motel. One afternoon, you put on your sunglasses, step outside, and within no time your glasses are “fogged up”. Explain what has apparently caused this? New Orleans is a humid location and averages a dew point temperature of 72F degrees and contains a lot of water vapor. The air-conditioned room cools your glasses down near or below the outside dew point temperature. As you step outside into the humid, warm and moist air, water vapors condenses onto the glasses forming fog.…

When I was a little kid, I was always curious about the world around me and wanted to stay outside until my mom was forcing me into the house. The world fascinated me and I wanted to understand how it worked. Upon entering high school, I was given the tools to learn about the natural world. The summer before my senior year of high school I attended a trip to the western United States, it was a one-month backcountry camping trip. I got to visit Yellow Stone, The Grand Tetons, Devil’s Tower and the Black Hills. The whole time I was there, I was in awe, the days flew past, and in that moment I knew I needed to learn more about the beautiful landscape. I enrolled in an intro geology class my senior year offered through Indiana University, and the deal was sealed. When I chose DePauw, I took three geology courses my first semester and declared the major…

When it comes to choosing classes for a semester I always try to choose an enjoyable class. One where I know I will not have to stress over tests and homework. Last semester was weight training. This semester as I was browsing I stumbled upon a class titled Geology 270. This class caught my attention right away. I looked at the course description and read it. The thing that stood out the most was that in this class we would study the geology of the eastern Sierra Nevada in one of the most unique ways one could think of, a 3 day field trip. I have never been camping and I thought this would be the best way to do it for the first time. I figured since I would go with teachers and other students it would be both fun and educational. I was not wrong. So, I signed up for the class and signed up my sister for it too. The day of the field trip came quickly.…
