relationships of these characters.
One pair of relationships between these books that I thought were very different was Homer and Sonny’s relationship compared to Huck and his Dad’s relationship.
In The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, Huck’s dad was always described as a very rude town drunk who didn’t really have any morals at all. He went out of his way to try to stop Huck from getting educated and being successful. In October Sky, Homer was quite the opposite. At the start of the book Homer seemed like he was always disappointed and didn’t like Sonny. Later you see that he want Sonny to be successful but for some reason he doesn’t want to show it. When Sonny asks for supplies Homer refuses to him but then later on the things Sonny asked for show up. I think this is the main separation between Huck and his dad’s relationship and Homer and Sonny’s. While Homer acts like he doesn’t like Sonny, he still helps him out and wants him to have a successful life. Huck’s dad on the other hand doesn’t ever want Huck to be better than him and won’t allow him to have a successful
life.
A pair of relationships that I thought were similar but different at the same time is Sonny and Quentin compared to Huck and Tom Sawyer. Both Quentin and Tom Sawyer were the friends of the main characters and they were both quite unique in their own ways. Quentin was very smart and witty but was also socially awkward. Tom Sawyer was a very social person, but he thought that everything had to be done a certain way even if that way makes no logical sense at all. Both of these characters played a similar role within the stories and had almost identical relationships with the main characters. I think the main difference between the two relationships is that in Sonny and Quentin’s relationship things are too overthought while in Huck and Tom Sawyer’s relationship the opposite is true. Overall I think these two relationships are basically the same just portrayed in different ways.
