George B. Geary: The Three Levels Of Employment Law
As a manager looking to discharge an employee, I am responsible for checking the legality of my reasoning to ensure it is not considered wrongful termination. Employment law is covered at three main levels: federal, state, and local governments and agencies. At the federal level, laws and regulations are passed and blanket the nation, covering all states and organizations within the United States. States also have the power to pass their own laws within their own borders and can sometimes cover the same subjects as federal law. Within certain cities and municipalities, local governments can pass laws affecting those within its limits. When looking at the 3 levels of employment law, you must consider the types of laws and what or where they …show more content…
Cities and municipalities are covered by ordinances, which are local enactments and laws that only cover the territory in which they are written. In September 1974 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court heard and decided on an appeal from George B. Geary who initially filed suit against United States Steel Corp with the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In the case of Geary v. United States Steel Corp., which can be found at https://tinyurl.com/GearyvUSSteel, Geary was attempting to prove wrongful termination after making his supervisors aware of a faulty product that could have proven detrimental to both the public and US Steel. Geary was a salesman for the company for 14 years and was considered an expert in his field. He was required to know and understand the products he was selling, and was, by company policy, required to share any discoveries that were related to the products he was selling.
