George Mclellan Short Biography
George B. McClellan was on born December 3rd, 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. McClellan had two nicknames, Young Napoleon and Mac the Unready. His father was George McClellan and his mother was Elizabeth Sophia Steinmetz Brinton McClellan. He had one son, George B. McClellan Jr. His grandson was Samuel McClellan. George B. McClellan grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to West Point University and was a graduate of West Point. He served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He had left the army to work on the railroads. Once the Civil War started McClellan was back in the army. Within the Civil War, McClellan was the Major General. McClellan had orders to protect and fortify the capital of Washington, D.C. He assembled an army of 168,000 men to fortify one area. No enemies got through their defenses. That was a memorable moment for McClellan and that made him look like a strong and good leader. Although he had many great moments, he also has some moments people would want to forget. He didn’t get his nickname Mac the Unready for a good reason. He had a plan to attack the Confederate Army that he seemed would work. They tried their hardest to achieve the plan to win against the Confederate Army and they almost achieved it. Sadly, McClellan retreated, even though the leader of the Union in that battle, Robert E. Lee, had done some bad tactics and had many casualties. We could have and would have won that battle if McClellan didn’t have doubts in his mind about how many men he had left. While McClellan was in West Point he was very energetic and ambitious. Many of McClellan’s friends at West Point were aristocratic Southerners.
