There’s no point in trying to fight the government; it will always have control over us, no matter how hard we try to fight it. Americans are like the members of Oceania in Orwell’s 1984 today due to the use of photo and media manipulation by the government in order to rewrite the past. Some people may believe that the government does not have complete control because the public voices their anti-government opinions through protesting, but little actually comes out of these protests. Manipulation by the government has been proven time after time in America, and Orwell predicted that. In 1984, “The Party,” their system of government, uses media manipulation to rewrite history. They change people’s perception of the past by changing the story of history, just like with Eurasia and Eastasia. Winston, the protagonist of 1984, works for The Party by rewriting articles including one that reads “Oceania was at war with Eastasia: Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia. This manipulation is used in order to achieve total control over people’s voice, even with the people’s right to freedom of speech. Some people may believe that the government doesn’t have complete control because the public voices their anti-government opinions through protesting, but little actually comes out of these protests, so the control still exists. Even while some protests have some success, most do not because not all of the supporters are committed to the cause, after all, these protests are built on an idea. For example, even with the protests against Trump, the election won’t be recalled. There is some say in this though, like a recount of votes, but protests aren’t strong enough to actually change society in the legal system.
