Many futuristic texts depict grim and bleak worlds; however the author often tantalizes the readers with a taste of hope, only to systematically destroy it . Hope is defined as that that is wanted or desired is attainable, without hope there is no reason to live. Throughout the novel ‘1984’ by George Orwell there is an undercurrent of hope, of the possibility that things can improve in the future. However, by the end the text is completely bereft of hope. In Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ we see a dystopia devoid of hope, where the only possibility of bettering your life is to move “off-world” and leave behind the now effete Earth behind.
At first glance it would seem that Orwell’s ‘1984’ is completely without of hope. Everything is monitored, there is no freedom and the thought police are rampant and ruthless on though criminals. In such a seemingly decadent society it would seem impossible for hope to exist. However, throughout the text there are a few subtle symbols of hope; the most obvious of these is the “Golden Country” that Winston dreams of. It is described by Orwell as a “rabbit bitten pasture with a molehill here and there, with a slow moving stream nearby,” this is clearly a stark juxtaposition of the dirty, industrial society that exists in the “real world”. This utopia exists only in Winston’s subconscious, yet it reveals a lot about Winston. This “Golden Country” is what Winston is searching for, it illustrates that even though it would be nearly impossible to overthrow the party, the hope of this happening still lives on in his sub conscious. However, this dream is tainted by the presence of O’Brien, which makes us think that maybe this utopia is unattainable, and ultimately just a dream.
There are two main people in the text ‘1984’ that symbolize or contain hope for the future. These are Emmanuel Goldstein and the Prole woman Winston sees out of the window of the antique store. Emmanuel Goldstein is a ghostlike figure, and by the end of the book

    Without expressing his needs and desires Winston would lose his mind and become vulnerable to the Party. Thus enabling the Party to control Winston entirely. His mother's reaction shows his relationship of love with the past and his longing for past times and attitudes. Winston's memory of the times right before he lost his mother illustrate the historical turbulence leading up to this point. This shows a clearer picture of the economic situation emerging. Winston went through the struggle of starvation and losing his family. This is makes him realize that the proles are in some ways superior to himself and other Party members, because they have maintained their humanity and their dignity. The idea of the proles persevering despite, the trying times, allows him to retain control of his mind but more importantly it gives him faith. "If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the populatio of Oceania, could the force to destory the Party ever be generated." (72) Winston does not merely dream of his family and past events. He fantasizes about "the Golden Country". The "Golden Country" is a place with pastures, trees swaying in the wind and a clear sparkling stream. This place represents Winston's ideal, where he can be at peace and not constantly dodging the Party and its tactics. The fact that Winston thinks about this in his subconscious mind is significant because he believes (as stated in Chapter Two) that the only thing you own is your brain and your thoughts. So his dreams allow him freedom from the totalitarian world in which he lives. They represent history, and the independence associated with history. The existence of the Thought Police is testament to the Party's determination to control people's thoughts as well. The Thought Police can see everything.     In 1984, three outwardly misleading characters include Winston, O’Brien, and Mr.Charrington. Since the beginning of the novel, Winston hates the authoritarian rule of the Party and constantly expresses his hatred through suppressed means. For instance, he writes obscenities against the Party in his diary, he secretly has sex with Julia as an act of rebellion, and he attempts to join an organization that opposes the Party. Yet despite all this, he acts loyally when he is being watched; for example, he alters documents wherein he praises the Party for its numerous exploits and achievements. It is fitting that by the end of the novel, he is brainwashed to love the Party: “he had won the victory over himself. He loved big brother” (Orwell, 311). This double contrast highlights the discrepancy present within reality, as in the end, his character is directly at odds with who he initially is in reality. O’Brien is an ambiguous member of the Party who Winston initially comes to trust as a result of a dream where O’Brien says “[w]e shall meet in the place where there is no darkness” (Orwell, 2). This statement itself is contradictory, as Winston initially thinks that O’Brien is referring to the joyful time when the Party is finally overthrown and people are free, but it proves to be a bright room where Winston is endlessly tortured by O’Brien. Winston believes that O’Brien shares his enmity towards the Party, but is proven wrong when O’Brien turns out to be a member of the Thought Police and his subsequent torturer. Thus, O’Brien reinforces the discrepancy between appearance and reality, as his sympathetic character proves to be a trap.
