It is possible that George’s job is contributing to his bipolar disorder. Although the job did not cause the disorder because symptoms had developed during college, before his job. There is no identifiable cause of George’s bipolar, but one possible cause could be explained by the stress hypothesis. The stress that his job is causing him can affect the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary glands, and adrenal glands). Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone released during stress. Elevated cortisol for long periods of time can impair cognition and affect the functioning of the HPA axis. George’s job may not be the cause of his disorder, but it seems to be getting in the way. George had spent all summer stressing about his job, but spent a month constantly worried about details. When George found out there would be no extra travel funds and his assistant took leave he spiraled into depression. I think that George said a lot of things that could hurt his career in the interview. Including beginning a romance with a student and would use the funds from the fund-raising drive. George said that taking a trip with a student might blossom into a romance which causes an issue with his current wife and would cause a controversy at the school. He also said he would use funds previously raised for the whole team and track facilities. Before his hospitalization, his director did not seem pleased with George. Although George may have said several controversial things, he also was in a state of mania. With that in mind, the boss should keep a careful eye on him assuming George has found a treatment that is working for him. If treatment is not working and he exhibiting severe symptoms of his bipolar, then the boss might consider firing
