In 1971, Georgia O’Keeffe completely lost her central vision and relied on her peripheral sight. Due to her failing eyesight, she abandoned oil painting. She painted her last unassisted oil painting in 1972. She continued to work with watercolor and charcoal for about another year, and then in the place of drawing and painting, O’Keefe learned how to do pottery from Juan Hamilton. He became a close companion and assistant of O’Keeffe’s. She continued to push herself. In 1976, she wrote her biography entitled Georgia O’Keeffe and published it with the help from Juan. In March 1984, she moved in with Hamilton to be closer to medical facilities near Sante Fe.
Georgia O’Keeffe lived a long life. She died at age of 98 at the Saint Vincent Hospital in Sante Fe, California. The date of her death was March 6, 1986. Her body was cremated, and her ashes were scattered over the New Mexican landscape.
Georgia O’Keeffe’s legacy was one of greatness. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, in Sante Fe, New Mexico, opened in July 1997. It is the only museum dedicated to one female artist and it houses over 1,100 of her
