My name is Emmanuel Berg. My family and I like the outside. Whenever we have time, we go camping in the mountains or on a lake. It is very important that you bring everything you need for camping. If you forget something important, it is possible to be facing a large problem.

We have everything possible. I like to take a ball and gym clothes with me. Then we can play sports. If we have time, we also do team sports. I bring my bat and my balls, so I can play. A flashlight is also very important.

We usually sleep in tents and sometimes sleep in the open air. That makes a lot of fun. My brother and I sleep in the same tent. We talk for a long time before we fall asleep. This is not a problem because I like to spend time with my family. In addition, we are late the next day.

The article began by saying how a ‘splendid but hugely expensive garden would be created in the grounds of Alnwick castle’. This gives us the impression that she is rich and is wasting her money away on some project that is costing 5 million pounds. It is until around line 70 when the readers get a bad impression of the Duchess as until then it says how ‘the locals’ ‘were less than impressed’ asking who ‘does she think she is’. This gives us the impression that the locals don’t think that she is a worthy Duchess and are not fond of her. It then goes on to say how the ‘duke and duchess believed they just had to click their fingers and everyone else would come running’. This gives the impression that they think they can do what they want and they think they are so powerful that everyone will come running to them and do whatever they please. By line 70 however, the readers start to see a different side of her when Rachel Cooke’s actually goes to see her when she realises that she’s not actually a bad person. The Duchess goes on to say how she ‘should try to win the critics round’ but she cannot be bothered. This gives the impression that she doesn’t care about impressing the locals and if they don’t like her then she will deal with it and not chase after them persuading them to like her. When she speaks she then says how she never expected to be Duchess and how it was ‘difficult for [her] to leave the farmhouse’. This gives us the impression that she’s actually a normal person and her background isn’t from royalty. Just because she is a duchess doesn’t mean that they have ‘unlimited cash’ she goes on saying. This gives us the impression that she feels that people instantly judge and think that she is very rich and doesn’t have any money problems but she has to ‘pay card bills’ just like anyone else. Furthermore it gives us the impression that she doesn’t feel like royalty she…

Could you read it for me?” He laughed—a ten-year-old, smugness laughter. “You Dummkopf—you idiot.”” When Liesel was at school, Ludwig Schmeikl made fun of her, but eventually he apologized. The conflict between Rosa Hubermann and Frau Holtzapfel, that Frau Holtzapfel spits at Rosa’s door every time she passes. The time when Liesel tried to save a book from being burnt in the bonfire, but when she took it, “The book was starting to burn her. It seemed to be igniting.” The time Max was freezing at times and got eventually went in a coma, the conflict was man vs. nature. One of the man vs. society conflict is that Liesel don’t like Hitler because she know he has to do with her father, her mother’s disappearance, and her brother’s death. This makes her go against the 90% of the society. “The word communist + a large bonfire + a collection of dead letters + the suffering of her mother + the death of her brother = the Führer.” So at Hitler Youth, she has to pretend to follow Hitler or she would get punished. All these moments of conflict help make the story interesting because without it, the plot would be flat, boring, and it…

Zusak, in this book, creates a very identifiable and unique protagonist and then surrounds her with equally unique and engaging characters. The protagonist is Liesel Meminger who is only nine years old when she is taken to live with the Hubermanns, a foster family, in Molching, Germany in the late 1930s. She arrives with few possessions, but among them is The Grave Diggers’ Handbook, a book she stole from her brother’s burial place. During the years that Liesel lives with the Hubermanns, Hitler becomes more powerful, and life on their little street becomes more fearful, and Liesel becomes a full-fledged book thief. She rescues books from Nazi book-burnings and steals from the library of the mayor. She steals, not because she is a kleptomaniac, but she steals books that mark important moments in her life. “The point is, it didn’t really matter what the book was about. It was what it meant that was more important. THE BOOK’S MEANING: 1) The last time she saw her brother. 2) The last time she saw her mother.” Liesel is illiterate when she steals her first book, but Hans Hubermann, her foster father, uses these prized books to teach her to…

Death describes his first encounter with nine-year-old Liesel Meminger as she attends the funeral of her brother in the late 1930s. The brother, Werner, died on a train as their mother was taking them to Molching, Germany. They were to be left with a foster family in order to distance them from their parents' past communist sympathies. It is just after the funeral that Liesel steals her first book, after it is dropped in the snow by a gravedigger's apprentice. Despite being under-educated, knowing only the three German words for “the”, and unable to read the book, she keeps it as a final memento of her brother.…

Chaos. Love. Heartbreak. Loss. These were emotions many in Nazi Germany had to deal with, often at the same time. Markus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief perfectly illustrates the struggles and injustices these people had to deal with on a daily basis. The novel follows Liesel Meminger, a young girl living with foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, in fictional Molching, Germany during World War II. She became best friends with Rudy Steiner. One day a young, Jewish man named Max Vandenberg showed up at their home begging Hans and Rosa to hide him. They agreed because Max’s father was Hans’ old friend. Even though Liesel feared Max at first, she later becomes very close to him creating a special bond. One day, Hans gave a Jewish man bread and as a consequence, Max had to leave for both his and their safety. After this, Liesel began writing her life story. One night, while in her basement, the street the Hubermanns lived on was bombed, killing everyone except Liesel. Everyone living through those times had to endure many terrible injustices, however, while some sat down and let the injustices go untouched, others stood up and fought for change. The most effective of these fighters was Liesel Meminger.…
