As a single parent working full-time and enrolled half-time in the Masters of Arts online program at USC’s Davis School of Gerontology, I am a goal-oriented person. This orientation drives me to achieve any goal I set through persistence and commitment. Although I have balanced work, school, single parenting with grace, I continue to remain motivated.
The goals I have set for myself are twofold. First obtain a Masters of Arts in Gerontology; the elder generation impacts our future one, and it’s crucial that we care for our elderly. Secondly, I have the desire to enter the entrepreneurial realm because as I am passionate about serving our aging population and making a contribution to my community. I am pursing a professional degree in Gerontology because I see a growing need for specialists in this field due to the “Baby Boomer” generation living longer and healthier lives.
My concern, passion and creativity blooms when I consider the possible resources and services that should be planted and grown in order to better prepare the younger generation for the needs of an aging populace. As a personal testimony, I have witnessed people with physical limitations who will be in need of social, medical and psychological services to maintain healthy lives. My own parents have battled with these limitations. My parents have inspired me to become more knowledgeable and skilled in prolonging the lifespan of this population so that I can better serve them in maintaining a good quality of life into their later
years.
A deep personal experience has influenced my decision to complete my graduate degree in Gerontology. Through a women’s church group in Sacramento, California, I volunteered at St. Claire’s Nursing Home. This was my first experience interacting with a diverse older population pulled from all walks of life. It was a rewarding venture and wonderful opportunity to learn and grow. We spent 1-2 hours a week bringing hand crafted gifts, speaking encouraging words and praying for the residents in this nursing facility. Not only did I learn how to collaborate with other individuals on a group project, I developed a passion for helping older adults in the community.
This scholarship will have a significant impact in my life, giving me more resources to pursue ways. This scholarship would not only have an impact on my life with its provision of financial assistance towards tuition, it will provide networking opportunities and volunteer involvement that will enrich my life. Ultimately, the Black Alumni Scholarship will help me accomplish my goals, better prepare me for a deeply edifying career, and expand my desire to make a difference as a Gerontologist.
