The Gesta Franco rum is an anonymous historical source of the first crusade that surveys events from the revelation of the first crusade at the council of Clermont in November 1095 till the battle of Ascalon in t 1099. Although the Gesta Franco rum is one of the first major sources to account the first crusade and therefore important in analysing the crusading events, the authenticity is put into question as the identity of the author remains relatively unknown, despite many historians researching and analysing the source the identity of the author remains unknown.
Major Historians such as Robert of Rheims, Baldric of Dol and Guibert Of Nogent have analysed the Gesta and mentioned the gesta has provided important insights into the crusading event as well as exploring the key themes which arose in the era. The gesta contributed in exploring further themes and insights which were apparent in Further Crusading Movements. For example the author’s view of Greek Christians as “false Christians” was openly portrayed here and as we notice this idea is also developed in forthcoming crusades and encounters …show more content…
between the Franks and Greeks.
As in ny orical source the authenticity of a source is extremely important when considering how accurate and whether the source has enough credibility to use as evidence for any document.
As the identity of the author is relatively unknown, we need to analyse his use of commentary, language and the way he describes certain actions to analyse the personality of the author. The Gesta provides an insight of the first crusade through the ranks of bohemond’s knights and continiously portrays bohemond as a “hero”. The authors continous appraisal of bohemund as a hero and the use of “we” when commenting on the armys movements and crusading developments could show us that the author was part of the army or infact offering support and using the term “we” as a collective support for the
Christians.
As analysis has shown us the author shows intellectual thought and his use of language and thorough theological knowledge shows the author was educational. The authors use of latin vocabulary and grammar skills shows possibility of a clerical education therefore the author could be a clerk or a clerical assistant that is narrating unfolding events before him.
He constantly praises the Christian army and knights he follows
The gesta is written in a first person narrative and therefore we could argue it could be a diary narrative written by soldier of Bohemund’s army. Historians such as Hagenmeyer argue the gesta is merely like “war diaries”.
